Anyone know of some good rackmount cases that can comfortably fit 4 5830s or equivalent cards? Preferable without modding, but if it's the difference between a $70 case and a quick mod vs. a $400 case I'll do the mod.
I've got such a mess worth of parts and I should really streamline everything and get a proper rack.

http://wiki.eth-0.nl/index.php/LackRack + a few L-profiles + metal bars + a plate for the motherboard. Should be enough for 2 PCs each and cost an afternoon plus less than 50 USD to build.

Those both say 7 expansion slots. Does anyone have any experience fitting four GPUs inside?

I don't think any of these will fit 4 double width GPUs ...you need space between each for the cooling fan on each card to be effective, which means each card will need 3 slots...so to fit 4 such cards, you'd need 12 slots in total (never mind the problem of finding a mobo that has 4 16x PCIe slots spaced accordingly). I've looked for solutions and I just don't think there are any if your objective is to get more than 2 double width GPU cards into a rack mount case without doing any mods. My suggestion is load up with dual GPU, 4U servers and spend your time trying to figure out how to power them and keep them cool (hot/cold isle if you can) rather than modding cases. Close off the case and forcing cool air into the front (buy a portable A/C unit) and vent hot air out the back and out of the room is the best way to go. I'd also advise 5970's over 6990's. You'll get more efficient hashing with the 5970 and 6990's exhaust hot air out of both ends!!! (what were they thinking!!!)

Cablesaurus.com (the guy who sells the modded PCI-E ribbon cables with molex power connectors) did have a custom mining case on his site yesterday, capable of holding 5 GPUs up and off of the mobo for better cooling. However as of this morning it's not there anymore. It was listed for $220 (plus shipping) and would require a $25 cantlievered rack shelf or similar in order to rackmount it. Meanwhile I've developed the functional equivalent in a rack-mount form factor, capable of holding 5 GPUs and two PSUs (or one) which I can sell for $120 out the door, plus shipping. Lead-time would take about a week from this Tuesday, as I've got to buy another drill press and pull my tap/die set out of storage to finish these off. Alternatively I could sell you plans and a parts list for about half of that, but it'd get you started sooner. Either way you'd need riser ribbons in order to use it. PM me if interested. |

The Rackmount 8 looks interesting, but I don't see any price anywhere? EDIT: Found the Rackmount 16 online, and it costs $6,974.07 Not really worth it IMHO. |
