Ugh. I'm still waiting for Dwolla to complete the transfer FROM my bank account TO Dwolla. If it takes them another week to get the money to MtGox I'm gonna go on a shooting rampage. (Or bitch and moan impotently. 50:50 imo.)

Tips are appreciated (very tiny tips are perfectly okay!) 13gDRynPfLH3NNAz3nVyU3k3mYVcfeiQuF

...which makes me wonder if exchanges and online payment processors have a legitimate place in bitcoin.  there are ways around this- like buying an amazon.com giftcard and selling it to a fellow user here.  so much for "know your customer" and sucking up to the IRS/CIA/politicians.  as the network grows liquidity does as well- which is the reason to have exchanges in the first place.

what is to stop a forum member with a merchant account from selling bitcoins via credit card/debit card?

This is insane! Every delay highlights how bitcoin (and p2p in general) can contribute to creating a truly transparent and fluid economy.

the "float" makes banks very rich.  remember this when bitcoin operators start doing it because they most certainly will.
