Bitcoin is just a token name. There is no single name that can fully cover the meaning.

Bitcoin is a great name, like many people in this thread have metioned, so maybe I even have  no right to fantasize about how to rename it. But ok, OP, let's fantasize. I'd name it Antimoney. I know, it's a terrible name, right? )

I personally wouldn't change it if I could , name is not perfect but It's not bad either . But like some people pointed already , there is no "coin" in Bitcoin .
But I suppose if bitcoin will screw fiat over , Physical coins should be created in the future .

And for what purpose? Which material would you use?
That seems like a horrible nonsense to me, using a physical material to physically represent bitcoins. First that would fuck the 21 million limit: the new limit being how much of the physical material is out there.

How to kill a purpose like a true motherfucker, yeah. Absolute nonsense. Sorry. I feel like you completely misunderstand what bitcoin is, OmegaStarScream.
I mean bitcoin doesn't even need it in the first place. Bitcoins already exist as of now. There's no need to physically be able to feel them for them to exist.

Actually "coin" was not really a very good choice (as Andreas M. Antonopolous has pointed out many times) as "coins" are a very bad metaphor for how Bitcoin actually works.

The problem with new technology is that "old words" just don't fit very well - so I'm guessing the name was chosen to basically make it clear that it is a type of "money".

So if it were to be renamed the "coin" part would be what I'd drop - maybe "Bitmoney" might have been better.

if we have to rename it anyway...

Bitium or Bithium. best I can think of considering that it is mined and dividable (like precious metals).
both names are taken by some companies though. and apparently -ium is supposed to be used to denote a metallic name.

or if the "bit" part also have to be removed, Inthium or BTCinthium... sounds weird?
OP, this is a good thread idea I have to say.  I honestly never liked the name Bitcoin, but it is what it is.  However, my level of acceptance of most things is generally high and I've never considered an alternative.

Encrypted, I like your ideas here--those are good names.  It's really too bad that btc won't get renamed.  Even Ethereum is a better name I think.  LOL

Bit = a unit of information in a computer that must be either 0 or 1 (source : The Cambridge Online Dictionary)
Coin = a small, flat, and usually round piece of metal issued by a government as money (source : Merriam-Webster)

Makes sense?

I think it's an interesting idea to change its name but keep all the rest intact besides any new improvements of course. This way we can have a more clean image for it without all the bad press from the old days, drugs, silk road, mt gox, etc. It can also become more regulated without losing its decentralized identity too.

A name change could also mean instability so on the other hand it could be a very bad decision.

You are right and the name is great, it looks attractive. We have to accept it to called as Bitcoin, as the inventor of it has given to it. There may be a number of more attractive and best names for a currency or a virtual currency like bitcoin but I think the person who suggest a name should have to struggle hard to create a currency for that  Smiley.

I think i would have named it "Liberty" cause there is nothing that can possibly define its meaning or even the purpose of its creation. However considering the amount of freedom one gets while using i think that would be pretty much suitable for it.

I would simply go with BlockTokens or BT's, because the token can serve serveral purposes, not just being a currency. Bitcoin only indicate the currency aspect of it, and that is wrong. There are much
more to it than the currency token. It will also go with the latest movement in industry, to not refer to the token, but rather the technology behind it. The legacy associated with the Bitcoin name has become a bit dodgy, and people avoid using it in presentations or general discussions.

I think it is a good idea, but re-branding comes with new challenges and we do not need that at this moment.

Hmm how about bitcash?

i believe that satoshi avoided on purpose every name that was related to fiat in some way, like "money" "cash" etc, to keep the distance from a centralized system

so calling it coins is more appropriate because it also have more to do with gold(and bitcoin and gold share more similarities) than fiat papaer

But it is not an antimony but it is a best source of generating money. I think antimony will be a discouraging name for it, I really not like that name for it. If I am not wrong then it should have to be antifiat or non-fiat currency so it becomes NFC a more attractive name.
