Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

There's also sites like https://ethereumwallet.com/ which will generate a wallet for you.  This one allows you to download the key which I believe will work with GETH / Mist clients.  I don't know how safe sites like this are so you'll have to determine for yourself if they're safe enough or not.

No doubt though that you are always better off using a wallet on your own computer.

I use mist
https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releases

Works well for me. I only use offline wallets for all my alts and BTC. NEVER EVER use an exchange as storage. My beautiful beautiful MONA was stuck on cryptsy for months on end (they were saying wallet maintenance for ever!) and then they went bust. Good thing I got my other stuff out.

Mist is very easy to set up on linux.  Just unzip and run the wallet,  Sync blockchain takes 2 hours or so.

it is always hard to trust any online wallet for altcoins, the bitcoin online wallets are different so don't compare the two.

but if you must have an online wallet i suggest you use a good exchanger to lower the risks (but not 0 risk) it is better than any online wallet you may find.

I trust the Ethereum community more than the bitcoin community.  Bitcoin is riddled with scammers.  You can't compare Ethereum to one of these shitcoins promoted on this forum.

Look under:
c:\Users\<profile name>\AppData\Roaming\Ethereum\keystore

There should be 1 file for each account you have.

I think you rushed set up and did something out of order, you have to let the wallet sync before you set up an account and protect it with a password. You may have to delete the install and start over. The steps at my blog article are pretty clear. Sync takes hours. May as well let sync finish and see if you are still locked out.
