I know this belongs in the alternate cryptocurrencies section, but I'm still limited to this forum. I know I have the correct Linux minerd executable in the same folder as litecoin (I run Ubuntu 12.10), but it doesn't recognize it. Same problem with another computer that runs 32-bit windows, but that's not the main issue, the Ubuntu PC is. What's causing this, and how can I fix it?

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

You don't need to put it in the same folder.
You need to run ./minerd -o yourpool:port --user username --password yourpassword

If you can't execute minerd, "chmod +x minerd"  Wink
