If we don't know how much resources space colonization needs we might just consume so much there isn't enough left to do it.

We don't even have a consistent theory on planet/ solar system formation yet, let alone tell how a future development would look like.

We have fairly decent knowledge how stars change through time though. So on that base it is reasonable to say earth would look more like Venus than Mars in the far future.
