I don't think he was running shady business, why do you even ask that? Google what happened to some Cyprus banks in 2013. The point is if he did use cryptocoins for everything which was impossible then and is still a lot of hassle, he wouldn't have been robbed.

The question is very much like "why do we need to use gold?".  And the answer, which has been stated already, is that you can use it if you want to.  Most people "use" bitcoin to speculate--buy low, sell high kind of thing.  Not sure about the dark markets, but I think it has huge utility there.  And you can buy gold & silver with bitcoin at Provident Metals!!

Maybe he needed a thread to farm/make a bunch of signature posts in. Anyway, OP - You don't need to use bitcoin. People use it for many reasons, but the reasons all have something in common, they like them. Having easy payments that can be sent to anyone around the world quickly is handy, and easy as well. Bitcoin is also somewhat anonymous, and transactions can't be reversed which is probably a large factor for some people.

If you are using it for gambling or ponzi then surely you will be poor as no one has been benefited from gambling yet, you should use bitcoin as a future investment.
