I have been trying to figure out how to mine bit coins for the last few weeks.  I was able to finally get a miner working (RPCMiner) but the pool site doesn't report that I did any actual work.  Here are the details:

Machine Specs:
Windows 7 (32 Bit)
4 GB RAM
3.2 (Dual Core) CPU
ATI Radeon HD4200 (Unable to use GPU for mining because of integrated video restrictions).

Pool: slush (aka: mining.bitcoin.cz)
Miner: rpcminer-4way.exe -url=http://localhost:8332 -user=xxx.yyyy -password=ppp
(where xxx is my user name on slush, yyy is the worker name, and ppp is the workers password).
Speed: ~5000 khash/s

I am manually running mining_proxy_1.2.0.exe (because slush's website told me too).

I let the program run for an entire day without the website giving me any credit for any work done.  Does anyone know the reason for this?  Am I missing something here???

-Mike

You should give this up - it would cost you more than you'd make. Just buy BTC if you'd like to invest

You're not fast enough to get any accepted shares. Sorry, try an alt coin like litecoin instead. Burnside is a good pool for litecoin.

Your GPU doesn't support OpenCL so you are CPU mining which is a waste of time and electricity.

This ^

If you want to mine because you're into the tech side of it, then that's fine. But if you're trying to mine to "earn money" then you should stop right now, because you'll never be able to outcompete the guys who know this stuff and have super special custom hardware. It's very competitive.

If you just want some Bitcoins, then go buy them using BitInstant.com.  (just like if you want some gold, you go buy some, you don't try to mine it...)

Ditto. Slush's pool will reject any shares from the previous block when a new one starts, and your 5 MH/s doesn't seem to be capable of submitting one in time. If you're really dedicated, you can try a pay-per-share pool like BTCGuild, which will pay out to any shares submitted. Most of your shares will make it, but you'll still have pretty meagre rates.
