AMA with someone who claims to be behind the ddos'ing of ip's running classic nodes for the last 24 hrs. Can confirm the attacks are real, but this guy specifically, could be bluffing.

Whoever this guy is, he's not shy.

The attacks have more or less stopped on my node since early this morning (9 AM eastern --US time).

He claims to be able to carry out the DDoS attacks for a month once the servers are paid for. I am not sure how accurate this is though.

I am not sure how DDoS will help in the progress of bitcoin. If Classic is really better it will eventually win the miners and the full nodes' endorsements. On the other hand, if it is scrap, it will sure die by itself.
This is the beauty of open-source and a decentralized system!

what a numpty, bitcoin will continue on and this moron will eventually give up.  it will be  a waste of money in the long run

For home user it might be probem because the internet will be down at the time of the attack. For VPS it is not big deal to be down ocasionally if you just run full node to support network.

The attack cost money + possibility of getting caught, so not worth it especialy when they can get down only about 10% of classic nodes.

I recently converted my node to a classic node and I have received a total of 4 alerts from my hosting provider advising me that I was getting DDOS'ed and that they are taking measures to prevent the attacks from reaching my VPS. This is while my classic node was still synching and was at roughly block 250k.

edit: 5 alerts and am at Huh block while (most likely still) syncing.
You should sync with Bitcoin Core 0.12.  It is roughly 7 times faster than "classic".

I've fended many DoS attacks myself running Bitcoin Core on my nodes.  DoS attacks against bitcoin nodes is fairly common, and I doubt the attackers care which version you run.

Sjå https://bitmynt.no for veksling av bitcoin mot norske kroner.  Trygt, billig, raskt og enkelt sidan 2010.

Ah Mircea MP is always busy on the side.
Either way the forum is using 0.12.0 but avoiding DDOS likely means keeping the node on and off.

Regarding the cost - I wonder who is paying for this and how much they've spent so far.

I am not sure how DDoS will help in the progress of bitcoin. If Classic is really better ...

with a 10GB local blockchain ?
it is not better !

and i don't see the 1/3 classic node on ... my (full 67GB) node.

so, no ... classic don't help Bitcoin network AT ALL.

Oh no!!! Not on-chain transactions!!!  Roll Eyes

If it ever gets to this mythical point of "node centralization" then the BTC price will be like what, 5k? 10K? You are benefiting from more people using the network anyway. So don't act like you aren't getting paid.

Enabling growth of the network / on-chain transactions also opens the door for the next great bitcoin "bubble" (price increase) especially if it is being used in such great transaction volume that 8mb+ blocks are actually required.

Limiting growth of the network is just insane... I don't get it. Do you want BTC to stagnate forever?

I've run a full node for over 2 years and had internet since the mid 90's.  Never had a single DDOS against me in all those years until switching the node to classic.  So yes they care which version you run.

What makes matters worse, apparently most of those nodes are pruned nodes (if they're using the service that is being promoted). Basically, it is just someone/a group of people who wants to show fake support for Classic.

Yeah the ddoss choopa server provider or amazon.. Tongue
You don't need to do that at all. The government needs to make 1 phone call. So much for Classic decentralization. Cheesy

Massive relative to BU's support maybe  Cheesy

With regards to the entire ecosystem its support is marginal at best.
