yes you can write with it, turn tip clockwise and ballpoint comes out ballpoint is very short about 3", i never used it for writing there  is plenty of ink left

 agree you can find it cheaper on chinese websites, not alot cheaper though, plus 10-15 days delivery time, actually i bought this pen from chinese website, however keep in mind you are taking chance ordering chinese merchandise, i ordered this pen and 2 lighters(also pinhole cameras) and both lighters were defective, this pen is in excellent working condition, 1.5BTC as low as i can go otherwise i keep it for myself
