Faucets, how does it work?

I'm doing some research on micro payments and was hoping someone could explain to me how faucets work. How does it get funded and what's the benefit for someone providing a faucet. Thanks in advance.

It brings a lot of traffic most of the time. Site owners profit from ads.

In faucets you can earn a small amount of satoshis. They have timer for example 500satoshis every 30minutes.
Yoi just need to write your btc address and type Captcha and press claim and you will get reward. It will be sent to micro wallet and when you will reach threshold you will get your satoshis withdraw to your wallet.
Faucets is funded by ads on site and by donators.

• set up ads on your faucet
• people collect some satosi from your faucet
• you get some satoshi from ads

sometimes you will lose because the ads earning very small

And when you get many views on your site your Alexa Ranking (global most viewed sites) increase. Some ads advertises just allow you to place their ads on your faucet/site if you are for an example on top 1.000.000 Alexa Ranking. This means more profitable ads for your faucet (and more advertise income). So you can earn more and give more satoshi for your users.

It's worth noting that running a faucet isn't as profitable as it once was.  Most of the faucets you see don't really last all that long.  I feel like the whole idea of faucets runs on hopes and dreams, and when reality sets in people abandon the venture and move on to something else.  Only to be replaced by new people who think they can do better.
