This article says: "ISIS has even tried -- with unknown results -- to exploit Bitcoin accounts to raise money overseas, even putting out an English-language guide." http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/04/middleeast/isis-finance-broke-lister/index.html Has anyone seen this? Seems like the Bitcoin community would have a copy if it were true. Maybe this is just made up BS? Otherwise, we should see a copy of this document somewhere around here. I think journalists make up about half of the crap they write. |

No proof has been provided, since day one of Bitcoin that it has been used in ISIS funding. I had this discussion again today with someone and I asked him this ..." Would you stop using cash or credit cards, if you found out that they used that as a method to fund terrorism? " ...His answer, " Why? No it's just a currency..." .. My response, " Exactly" All the hype in the media about ISIS being funded by Bitcoin, is pure sensationalism to get more hits and sell more papers. Other people just followed those first articles on the subject and shilled the shit out of it..  |

If airstrikes are currently targetting buildings where they hold fiat currency, I wouldn't be surprised if they convert part of that money into bitcoin and various other assets.
I don't think news like this makes Bitcoin look particularly bad, Isis probably also converts money into gold etc.
Although, this is yet another shady thing that Bitcoin is connected to..

I doubt that is true since no other source justify it and if it was, there was at least a clue in our community here but haven't heard such thing so far (specially after all these talks began earlier). Most likely a way to engage more audience and twist story, not to mention, prolong as well so just pure BS IMO.

I can't imagine them not using bitcoin. By them I mean DAESH. There has not been a group called isis in years now. The rest of the world calls them DAESH if they hate them and IS if they are supporters. But yes. they do use them and it should come as no surprise.

And how do they store the private keys of their Bitcoin wallets? They would probably use paper wallets because their phones and computers could be infilitrated easily or could be destroyed. But by using paper wallets, they have the same problem as with fiat money. The paper could be burned through bombs. So, there is no really advantage using Bitcoins over fiat money imho. Their phones are better protected than one would hope. They not only have the phones, but the phone lines, the switches, the cell towers, everything. If the police want your phone in most places they just ask your service provider. In the Islamic state some spook may have a hard time listening in on an encrypted conversation. Bitcoin is money and money has broad appeal. It really is about wealth and power not bitcoin. In fact the official currency of DAESH is minted in gold, silver, and copper. The image below shows the coins they mint.  |

I think its possible but you have to keep in mind almost every currency is used for it so its not to stop.
Also there is no real proof this is true and until that there is nothing to worry right ?

They excel at social media and video production. They give awful opsec and encryption advice up to and including 'rolling their own crypto.' |

It doesn't even matter that the article is made up crap, the simple truth is that Bitcoin is like a dream come true for groups like ISIS, it's the perfect way for them to accept donations from their supporters around the world without either side having to reveal a lot of info. And if they're not using it yet, it's only a matter of time before they do.

I would like to see that ISIS' tutorial. But this is probably nothing more than bitcoin address with the DONATE sign.
They are selling oil for $500 millions per year, rob banks for over $400 millions, sell antiques for $100 millions - and press is making a fuss over bitcoin donations?
Bitcoin is probably less than 0.01% of ISIS money, probably even less.
