The bitseed units are just a low powered computer running ubuntu. You got an old laptop with a 100+GB hdd sitting around? This would be a good opportunity to learn some simple ssh commands, tons of tutorials out there.
https://bitnodes.21.co is a good place to check the status of your node from any browser, just put in the ip, and it'll return your status and block height. You can ssh into your nodes to get more details via "./bitcoin-cli getinfo".
If you run it from your home connection... be prepared for semi-regular DNS amplification ddos attacks that will saturate about 100 Mbps for 15 to 30 min at a time... then, if you decide to run it from a better protected VPS, be prepared to be accused of operating a sybil attack against the network.
