Hi guys, I'm about to buy 2x AMD MSI Lightning 7970 to mine Etherum, as it's quite profitable and electricity is very low cost where I am.

I've read around and many people use many different setups. I've read some people suggest against using Windows, why is this?

I use windows to mine on 4x gpu. No issues. Have tried both ubuntu and windows and decided to just stick on windows.

Fyi those 7970 lighnings go like bats out of caves. You can overclock to 1200 core easy for 27+hash.

Do you overclock within ethminer, or a win program (like msi afterburner?). I was wondering if ethminer commands are the same as cgminer (for example --gpu-engine 1200)

Ethereminer is different from cgminer. It cannot over clock within the miner.  You have to use the msi afterburner.

This one goes to the same category with GTX 970 doing 21.5MH at 110W.

Really? How would I do this? I never was able to do it properly in cgminer!

Without starting a new topic ... figured I would ask here as well, what should I expect from 2x 7870xt?
Im currently getting about 27mh that shows in ethminer. The nicehash is showing about 33mh on average for the last 6hrs at least.

They are clocked at 1050/1575
*also, whats more important in mining ETH ... gpu or vram clock?

This sound bout right?

i know that windows work better with nvidia, the problem come with windows 10, not so much with 7, probably drivers issue related?

is the access to the memory that is important, and i don't remember all the details now, there was a post on the etheruem forum explaining it

The difference between W10 and W8.1 is how the memory is allocated in the GPU system. W10 is slower than W10, that is more apparent in the nVidia cards.

Im talking about clock speeds. Whats more important the GPU clockspeed or the GPU's RAM clockspeed?

i think it's the bandwidth

For the Ethereum  mining, memory speed is more important than the Core frequency. So increase that first.

Thanks for your answers guys =)

I have have another question. Are PCIe x1 -> x16/x1 adapters ok for eth mining or do the cards need the full pcie bandwidth?

I would think its fine since the dag gets preloaded into the vram.

No. PCIE 1x is good enough. The loading of the DAG is one off. It is OK if that is slow initially.

Thanks, just as I had suspected =)

i would recommend using those with usb, those with ribbors sometimes have signal problem, i'm experience this issue with my motherboard

What is the cause of the signal problem? Does it always happen on one motherboard and hanppen on many MB?

i think it has to do witht he slot, you need to connect two of the pin with a bridge connection, i've checked it in another topic, and it seems that some motherboard have this problem dunno why
maybe they are not designed to run the card on the x1 slot, by default? i don't really know

I think you can normally mine on Windows. I do that also from windows with a multi-rig, running smoothly.
