I either got lucky, or made the excellent choice of using bitinstant to transfer my investments to MtGox for some casual testing. 

But my real question lies as to when I want to take that money out and turn it back into cash.  (Or at least, numbers in a bank account) I'm assuming that most people are using bank transfers for this, but aren't the fees exorbitant?  Is that really the best option?

Yes.. the fee's are ridiculous..

But, surely there nothing stopping you selling bitcoins without a third party, ie, directly to a buyer, for cash (digits).. and not paying any fee's ?

I love bitcoins - everything about them.

FastCash4Bitcoin only charges $20 for a bank wire (and $0 for an ACH).
