Not much of an observer if you can't make articulated thoughts. The "West" is a geographically designated name, The East being towards Arabia and Asia. It just so happens most people think of the West as Europe, North America, Australia and few other spots that have advanced well. This would have also been generated from flat, physical maps with a compass - when the names first came into use.
