A date with Sybil

Lately, a fellow bitcoiner contacted me, suggesting that I should try to use OXT in order to check if the recent growth of Bitcoin Classic nodes is a real sign of increasing popularity. I wasn’t very excited by the idea because I’m already convinced that using the number of nodes as a proxy for popularity is a very wrong idea. Because, you know, Sybil is a nice woman but she’s a bit too crazy... Anyway, that seemed like a good study case so I’ve decided to give it a try and see what I could find.

I thought "sybil" is a controlling human mind system that make easier police's jobs to catch criminals, and then I read this thread and found that "sybil" is a woman's name. haha.

anyway good luck for your study case

Great article - Laurent really did his homework and didn't jump to any conclusions.

Classic supporters really don't look good here. These "shill nodes" are VERY centralized - the people who paid for them don't administer them or have  anything to do with them other than paying the AWS bill. The nodes are built from virtualized server images, and could very easily be hacked or altered to be malicious by the one or two people running this donation site.
