Does anyone know if the exchange platforms such as TradeHill or Mtgox are free source codes that anyone can download and setup shop? It would be a great thing to have "just in case" so that we can setup exchanges all over the world in the same style as BitCoin is growing. Only this way we can ensure that the BitCoin economy stays safe.

<helo> funny that this proposal grows the maximum block size to 8GB, and is seen as a compromise
<helo> oh, you don't like a 20x increase? well how about 8192x increase?
<JackH> lmao

I don't think Tradehill or MTGox are, but the Britcoin platform is open source if I'm not mistaken. Maybe Bitcoin Central as well.

These are not simple sites, and involve a lot of custom programming especially the trading match engine. So I doubt any of those sites will be open sourced.

To my knowledge, bitcoin-central was the first ever open source bitcoin exchange platform, published by Davout on December 31, 2010.
Since then, the software has grown so much that the original release is quite outdated: today, it would take significant resources to support such a complex application if it was operated by a myriad of sites.
Because of regulatory requirements for receiving deposits in fiat currency, I suppose a P2P exchange platform is much more relevant for an open source project.

When we started with building our exchange CleverCoin we took a look at most of these open source projects.
The architecture of most of them is terrible.
I heard there are some commercial exchange code/software sellers.
I would recommend to get in touch with them.
