I mean like on your local TV/radio stations, billboards,... Where the ad would 'simply' explain the concept and its advantages. Could this help to make bitcoin more popular?
EDIT: Or an even better question: should we try to make bitcoin more popular?

Ofcourse it will. If it will be advertised on the media then those who has no yet idea of what bitcoin is might take interest in it , so them trying what vitcoin is an addition to the bitcoin community. Bitcoin is not yet "that" popular because it has not reach every person in the world yet but I'm sure that once they heard it and the pros of using bitcoin , there will be more people adapting in using bitcoin as a currency.

Advertising's kinda wishy washy. Pay Apple a few billion to only accept bitcoins for the next iphone. Then we'll see some action.

Yes, but isn't the problem with the blockchain getting too much transactions that there are moments where the blockchain gets congested with transactions because of too many people using the blockchain? The problem was due to the maximum block size. I know that a while ago there were some arguments between pros and contras for raising the block size limit, but not sure if there's any more news recording these arguments...

It will probably exposes bitcoins potential and more people will use bitcoin, buying then the price will go up in my opinion.
Regarding the congestion in blockchain, i guess if the blocksize Increase the congestion will decrease but still slow.

I agree. Bringing more people in would help also improve liquidity and stability of bitcoin prices...

My experience has been that there are 2 categories of people that are hardest to get through to: people who know you too well, and people who don't know you at all.
The middle-ground has rendered more converts/fair hearings than the two extant categories combined: people who know you well enough to trust your opinion, but not so well that they have stereotyped your character.
So, maybe you need just enough trust, but not to be over-familiar. So using traditional advertising for Bitcoin itself doesn't seem like a natural fit, but some niche radio stations do exactly that ("liberty" themed talk-radio, for instance), so it can work depending on how receptive the audience might be as a result of the type of programming the advertisement runs in.
Indirect promotion could potentially be even more effective too. Discounts for Bitcoin purchases, freebies with BTC purchases, maybe a Store/Loyalty card with extra rewards for BTC use, etc etc.

Yes surely it has an impact on BTCitcoin popularity and makes it known better in general but in regards to billboards, it can't be the same since simply explaining the concept and its advantages takes a lot of it's space and those who design billboards try to have less text as possible together with an attractive brand logo instead but still could be used as a promotional tool. On the other had TV and Radio has a great impact when it comes to drive attention to new users.

If you want more people know about bitcoin and want the price of bitcoin increase, yes we should make bitcoins more popular. And no ads about bitcoin on my country.

Yes, i do see some shops here where they do give a discount should you buy with bitcoins would be great if more shops would do something likewise.

Yes, the billboard may be considered a stupid 'brainfart' :p. But yes, as you said, during commercials, somewhat a decent explaining video to promote bitcoins... Would be a nice promoting tool, but who is to do something like that?

Yes, but isn't the problem with the blockchain getting too much transactions that there are moments where the blockchain gets congested with transactions because of too many people using the blockchain? The problem was due to the maximum block size. Yes and no. The best way to allow more tx/s is to make the transactions smaller, not make the blocks bigger. Sure, eventually the limit will go up, but the developers will make every other possible change before that. The reason for that is that putting the blocksize limit up comes with costs as well as benefits. Fewer people would run the Bitcoin Core software (because the internet and hard disk space usage would go up by the same multiple you increase the blocks by). That would harm Bitcoin's monetary properties: we need the maximum number of people running Bitcoin to help keep the miners in line. It's kind of a difficult trade-off: we want more people in Bitcoin because that will help more people find their financial sovereignty, increasing the overall Bitcoin economy (as well as increase the exchange rate). But doing that using the blockchain directly causes the structure to slowly morph into a centralised system instead, risking the freedom that made Bitcoin attractive to begin with. So, making the transactions smaller was what the Bitcoin Core team decided on, essentially. The bigger blocks will still come eventually, but only after every other way to increase transactions has been added in.

just to point out to the know-nothing i quoted above a traditional bitcoin transaction is 500bytes on average. yet the physical hard drive storage of a full node using segwit+confidential payment codes while remaining at the 1mb maxblocksize. is estimated at 2.85mb per block for upto 3800 transactions of real data storage needs.. yet a 2mb maxblocksize allows for upto 4000 traditional transactions for only 2mb... which totally debunks all data bloat doomsdays and all pretense including the statement by carlton. because, if a segwit+confidential payment codes is not network heavy. obviously a maxblocksize increase is not either... simple maths 2mb is less than 2.85mb the only reason blockstream dont want the 2mb now is because they want to use it to hide the bloat of CPC, because they need the 2mb maxblocksize just to try keeping to the estimate of 3800 txs, after the CPC is activated, other wise we would see less transactions per block capacity. i did laugh thinking that carlton really believes that adding more flags for LN and the extra bytes needed for CPC was their attempt to make transactions thinner.. he must be a comedian in real life

It could help. I've seen bitcoin billboards and other advertisements; even on taxi cabs: http://imgur.com/tycvQTe. I think for billboards, it shouldn't contain too much info--people won't be able to read it while driving. Hopefully all the advertisements for bitcoin will get people interested and start using it more.

Well, yes, it would make it more popular, but you can't sell it like you would sell a typical product. It needs something fresh and less "nerdy" for more people to actually want to take an interest in it. Anything aside from that and you're basically throwing money away.
You can't really "sell" Bitcoin, you have to get people genuinely interested. This is something I don't think would be very easy to accomplish.

yes, it could. you know, a lot if people have TV in their houses, so they will watch the ad, and it'll help bitcoin to get more popularity. if we want to make bitcoin mire popular, we can promote it to our friends or family. show them the advantage of bitcoin and the fact that bitcoin is money.

It'll spark a curiosity for sure and maybe some viewers of the ads will google it and try to find out more about it and then they may or may not invest in it.
So yeah it could work but who's going to pay for the advertisements?
