My daily machine has been running Win 7 from it's initial install for a touch over 3 years and I'm quite satisfied. I've had maybe 2-3 crashes in that time which is pretty negligible given the computer has been turned on and running for essentially the entirety of those 3 years. Skipped Vista on personal machines, but didn't much like it when I have used it. Haven't tried Win 8. 7 or XP would be my vote.

XP is end of life.  Mainstream support (including security fixes) has ended.  Dont' use XP for anything except supporting legacy software (normally in corporate intranets).  Period.

Windows 7 or Windows 8 are both fine.  Personally unless you need the features of Windows 8 or are developing apps for Windows 8 I would go with 7.  The GUI in 8 just irks me.

So, after 9,001 octillion years of using only Linux, I'm going to have to dual-boot with Windows due to a handful of applications (mainly programming related) that will not run on Linux.

So, I heard that Vista was a complete failure, at the moment I'm considering XP, Win 7 or Win 8.

XP is the only one I've used for any considerable amount of time (and Windows 3.11 ).

What version of Windows do you guys recommend I get? Retail price is irrelevant

XP is too old. 8 is for hipsters. Vista was just the beta for 7. Get Windows 7.

Hey man, I ran Gentoo for quite a while. I loved it.

But when I needed to use Windows, I choose Win 7, cuz that's what we use at work. I've since upgraded to Win 8, but it's kind of meh. It doesn't add much compared to 7, but what it does add is superficial and unnecessary.

I have 64GB RAM, so I don't necessarily need a lite version of Windows 7, but its interesting as one thing I hate about Windows is its bulkyness. Anybody got any experience with something like this (stripped down versions of win7)?

I need to use CryEngine 3. Obviously there's no way of running that in Linux so it seems like a good excuse to finally take the time to install Win, so that I can also run a bunch of other stuff I've been meaning to try out but couldn't get to run via Wine etc.

A buddy of mine loves the CryEngine and mods with it. He uses Win7 as well. It's quite an elegant OS. I usually don't like Windows, and was running Linux prior to the win7 release. I actually haven't used Linux all that much since then. Haven't really found a need. However, I'm running BAMT for all my miners, and ubuntu on a few other servers. As for my personal every day PC, I've kept Windows 7 on it and I enjoy it. As for this tiny version of 7, I've never heard of it. It's pretty stripped down to begin with. Unless you just bought it new on some laptop loaded with bloatware. I'm running mine on SSDs with a nice CPU, RAM, and all the usual shit nerds brag about. In all honesty, my MoBo's splash screen on start-up loads slower than 7. Get Rainmeter if you wanna pimp it out a bit.

Abosulutely, By far, Windows 7 is the best Windows based OS.
Really it is... Friggin thing runs GREAT, AFTER your tweak it (for about two weeks)
Right now i only have 48 processes running (im not shortcutting my proccesses by doing things like killing print spooler when im not using it)
When the average VistAIDS has around 80+ running, Win xp generally has about 28-34 (12-24 if your a pro) But doesnt support DX11
I even install win7 on old 1.2ghz Craptops, And it runs Great

Stay with 7 if you want to use Windows. 8's still too new to be secure in all senses IMO.

The one thing is Win7 likes a lot of RAM.  2GB should be considered the bare min and 4GB is going to be more enjoyable.  Then again with 4GB costing less than $25 and 8GB costing less than $50 that is less of an issue than in the past.

Heard about it. Homemade version of striped down Windows with malware included that makes your computer part of botnet out of the box. The best thing is that some random stuff is not working properly because of disabled services or missing files.

Tiny Windows is a joke. It's the bare minimum for Windows to run, not to work.

Hopefully you have enough HDD space to install Windows.. ?
