North Korea instructed the country Monday to brace itself for possible famine and severe economic hardship — but not to despair, because “the road to revolution is long and arduous,” according to an editorial in the state-run newspaper.

The article, published in Rodong Sinmun — the print mouthpiece of the North Korean government — comes less than a month after the U.N. Security Council voted in favor of slapping the Hermit Kingdom with tougher sanctions, after the country teased its potential nuclear and military capabilities earlier this year. The editorial stated that hardships to come might evoke another “arduous march” — the term assigned to the famine that struck the country in the mid-1990s, killing as many as 3 million people, reports the Telegraph, a British newspaper.

“We may have to go on an arduous march, during which we will have to chew the roots of plants once again,” the editorial piece read.

Rodong Sinmun called for a “70-day campaign of loyalty” and reportedly demanded that the North Korean people demonstrate their allegiance to Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. To that end, the country is requiring all residents of Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital city, to deliver about 2 lb. of rice to state warehouses each month.

The Telegraph reports that the country has also requested nearly half a million tons of food aid from other countries. As of last month, however, only 17,600 tons had arrived.

Interesting.  The UN is prepared to sacrifice another 3 million in a vain attempt to change the mind of a verifiable megalomaniac with a total lack of empathy his people.  I guess the end game is depopulation?

whatever threats and sanctions the jews dream up for them the korean people will never betray their leader and country

Be radical, have principles, be absolute, be that which the bourgeoisie calls an extremist: give yourself without counting or calculating, don't accept what they call ‘the reality of life' and act in such a way that you won't be accepted by that kind of ‘life', never abandon the principle of struggle.

The problem is with that kind of tactic giving them money will inevitably mean that they'll simply target their dissidents and adversaries or people they find less important to the 'cause' the UN as with many western countries really have no fucking clue how to deal with people they can't just bomb and invade.

Famine is a holiday in North Korea?

These people have been through some shit and when they finally get out of the prison we need to throw them a global party.
The mindset to survive is just so hard, reminds me of a book "Mans search for Meaning" where it documents the every day survival in these concentration camps. Its a great book for anyone feeling a little lost in life.

Hard to prepare for famine when you're already close to the starvation line. I think China should be taking a lot of responsibility for North Korea. They are the only neighbour that can really influence this country but stand by and do nothing. If China wanted to decrease tensions they should get NK in line and tell them to stop goading WW3.

Reminds me of Genrykh Yagoda, who was the mastermind behind the Soviet famine of 1932-33. Some 10 million to 12 million people died (especially in Southern Russia, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine) after their gran stocks were confiscated by Yagoda and his goons (allegedly with Stalin's full knowledge). I am afraid that something similar will repeat in DPRK this time.

I have no sympathy for the North Korean government. I feel bad for the citizens living outside of Pyongyang though. They could really care less about the struggling people outside of Pyongyang. All they care about is making sure that every citizen believes America is evil and that every single portrait of Kim Jong-il and Kim-II Sung are kept in tip-top shape.

For any other normal, average country in the world, you will be right, but not for N. Korea.
In N. Korea people are completely brainwashed and believe everything they heard from their ''Great'' leader Kim.
So, if he told them that sacrifice is needed in order to save the country from ''Imperialists'' over there, people will follow and sacriface without complaints.
If someone complain, this person and whole his family will be send to the working camp.
So, everybody are scared and brainwashed so I don't think that any change in this country can came from people.
It can happen only from the top.

Its not an easy task to prepare for a famine, especially since most of the citizens there are starving anyway. However even for some, they may not even notice a difference. Undecided

That is the difference between the DPRK and the other third world countries such as Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan. The NATO could topple Saddam Hussein, because a significant part of the Iraqi population (especially the Kurds and the Shiites) were opposed to the regime. In the DPRK, there are no such population groups.

China just put in trade restrictions so it looks like famine holiday is going into full effect. Guess they had little choice with North Korea forcing their hand in a public way.
