Help with Bit core wallet Syncronizing with network

Hi

I am stuck, can someone advise.

I desperately needed a wallet (ransomeware, not me, someone else)

installed bit core and transferred funds...

Bit core was on a slow internet connection (4Mbs) and downloaded ALL weekend... when i found it this morning it said 38 weeks of data to syncronize. The computer it is on is quite slow as well, not the best.

Did some reading... think I chose the wrong wallet...

I put it on a 10Mbs uncontended line... it has been on for 4 hours... downloaded 70-90 gigs and still showing 38 weeks!

what can i do... I cant see the money I have transferred until it is up to date... right? im guessing I cant transfer it out to another wallet until it is up to date? so I am totally stuck... right?

can anyone give me advice... I obviously need to pay the ransome before the price goes up.... arghhhhh! (just like to state... it is for a friend... i keep backups!)

why not just use SPV clients like electrum or multibit? you won't need to download the whole blockchain with those.
as for your question. I'm not sure what causes it. can you post the debug log?

38 weeks isn't too bad. It would likely take another hour or two to complete. If you desprately needs the Bitcoins ASAP, you can try to extract and import it into an SPV client like Electrum. I don't recommend messing with your private keys at all. Please remember to make a backup before starting.

3. Go to Wallet>Private keys and select sweep or import.

3b. Import allows the keys to be spent from the original address. The key would however, not be covered by the seed. You have to keep a seperate backup and the change amount would be sent back to the original address.

38 weeks isn't too bad. It would likely take another hour or two to complete (2 hours later and it is at 37 weeks). Hi,

You need to backup the wallet.dat-file that's sufficient.
Its not that dangerous to export the private key, as long as you don't expose it
You need to install electrum and chose "restore wallet", paste your private key in the text area (I'm on my mobile, so I'm doing this from memory, the wording might be different)

Hi... right I think I just read this right and the previous post. to sum up (obviously nervous about doing this)

1. Backup the wallet.bat through the file\backup wallet menu (it is ok to do this whilst it is still trying to synchronise the network??)

2. Use the command lines (as stated above) to extract the current private key associated with the wallet

3. close the current wallet program

4. Install Electrum (can i do this on a totally different PC??)

5. create a standard wallet and remember the seed

6. Go to wallet, select private key and I think "sweep" is the best option and input my key (i think sweep is best, if i want to totally replace the current wallet with electrum??)

7. The bit coins that i transferred (3 days ago, and not visible in bit core because the network hasnt finished synchronising) will be there in Electrum for me to use...?)

Yes. The file contains the private keys. They allow you to recover if something should go wrong. You dont have to be in sync for this.

Yes, just make sure you transfer the private key in a secure way (e.g. not via Mail). In its unencrypted form it can be used to steal all your coins within seconds.

Yes, sweep will make sure that all funds you previously had on bitcoin core (or rather spendable with the private key in question, keep the wallet.dat from core anyway just in case) are now transfered to the electrum wallet. This will be done on the blockchain and will cost a small amount of fees.

Electrum does not need the entire blockchain itself. It connects to servers that already have the chain. These servers can tell your client all it needs to know without them knowing your private keys. Make sure you have a good (e.g. on paper) backup of the seed words. Forgetting the password is not a problem as long as you have the seed.

Just go ahead and complete the steps which others have given here. Downloading whole blockchain is madness. I tried it many times few months back and always went un-successful. At last I did what @ranochigo has written here with my blockchain.info account, and I got my bitcoins in my hand within few seconds.

Just running through the steps... wanted to double check one thing before i do it.

I have backed up the wallet and am trying to run the dumpprivkey command...

would i be correct in saying... the command is:

dumpprivkey myreceivingaddress                   ??

and I can copy "myreceivingaddress" within bitcoin core via file\receiving addresses???

It will then give me my private key which i can "sweep" into Electrum...

ps.... Electrum.org is the address to download the wallet??

All of you, thank you! I really mean that... its hard to express via a post, am really grateful (and to others who added comments which reinforced the message and therefore my confidence)

having never operated in the Bitcoin world, and not knowing anyone that has, I was worried at getting ripped off at every corner. And with it being someone else's money.... (a friend), that just added lots of pressure and anxiety to a situation which involved his livelyhood.

Now that I have done it (thanks to you) what seemed complex and scary is actually straight forward and I consider myself "schooled" (by you lot)

At least enough to know where to get coins, how to store and move them safely and securely.

On top... the other risk... that the criminals could have chosen to not hand over the encryption key and leave a friend without their WHOLE business record... well they stayed true to their word and handed over the key and I tested and it works.

So a big thank you from him as well!!!

Glad i could help... To bad your first experience with bitcoin was because of ransomware.
