Trademark trolls are the biggest cancer i've ever seen. Those guys are just leeches. He wants to ruin Andreas Antonopoulos massive effort into making a book (and keeping it updated) on the complex subject of Bitcoin, only because he used that phrase, so some other idiot that hasn't contributed to anything of value wants to get money off it? This is how it sounds like to me.

Andreas should save his bitcoin.  Finding some 'first use' doesn't preclude Uphold from registering a trademark.  By the way, they have an application pending: http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4808:j98e78.2.1  In fact, the notice of allowance was just issued today.

Andreas could Oppose the application.  You only need to be a person alleging to suffer harm if the registration were to be effected - to have standing in an opposition case.  However, you must file that 30 days from publication.  Uphold published Feb 2, 2016.  Therefore, about three weeks ago on March 2 - period for opposition closed.  Andreas could get an extension.  But he'd have to show some reason.  These are usually accepted even if the reason isn't so critical.  So, Andreas best move is to allege he would be harmed in some way, and oppose the application with extension.

On his current path, he is trying to find some previous use.  This does not prevent one from getting a trademark.  Many, many trademarks are secured for things that have long existed.  Andreas probably got this idea as it is similar to patent which does require originality.

I like Andreas.  I'll help him if he contacts me.  Smiley

Besides, who would sue Andreas?  He seems like about the nicest guy out there.  Uphold is going to make nothing but ill will from this stupid effort.

"The best and earliest example of the use of this phrase will be awarded a 1 bitcoin reward. If more than one example are worthy of reward, or more funds are raised, the operators of this site may (at their discretion) give additional rewards to the earliest or several examples. The minimum reward donated will be 1BTC.”

1 btc is now a very low ammount, not sure it would atract anyone.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_G._Watson

Quote
Anthony Watson is a British business and technology executive, and human and LGBT rights activist. Since 2013 he has sat on the board of GLAAD. In April 2015, he joined the Bitcoin trading start-up Bitreserve as its president and Chief Executive Officer.
He was listed 19th in Fortune's 2014 "40 under 40" list, fourth in Financial Times' 2014 list of influential LGBT executives, and 10th in The Guardian's 2014 "World Pride Power List", where he was described as "one of the most influential gay men in the world."

...

Shortly after leaving Nike, Watson joined Bitreserve in April 2015 as its president and chief operating officer. The then six-month-old company allows customers to trade in Bitcoin and hold more stable investments (currency or commodities) that are denominated in Bitcoin. Watson has stated he believes the company will help make the financial system fairer, saying "I wanted to do something that is valuable for people broadly, not just in one industry. And what Bitreserve is looking to achieve really democratizes finance. It's going to help people all over the world. The financial system is inherently unfair—it's always the richest who have access, and the poorest don’t have access, or when they do, they have to pay astronomical rates."

Anthony Watson: Andreas Antonopoulos, a random I’ve never heard before today, is an excellent ambassador for Bitcoin, truly doing something valuable for people broadly, helping people all over the world. It gives me great pleasure to sue his motherfuckin' ass because he used a phrase that belongs to me, and me alone. That said, I duly hope Bruno adds me to his Piece of Shit Bitcoiners Hall of Fame - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1414944.0.

There is some updated , It's seems like he is not planning to sue him :

Quote
In a recent article published by CoinTelegraph, it was reported that CEO of Uphold, formerly BitReserve, Anthony Watson, was to sue community-favourite, cryptocurrency security expert Andreas Antonopoulos over his use of the phrase, ‘The Internet of Money’, which happens to be Uphold’s slogan. Uphold reached out to CoinTelegraphCT r:  33 to clarify what Watson had said and reiterated that Watson had and has no intention of suing Antonopoulous.

This story reminds me of The Fine Brothers trademark stunt where they wanted other video makers on YouTube to pay them for a license to publish 'react' videos lol. Like the Fine Bros have invented the phrase ' react videos' it's so hilarious. Anthony Watson is just another troll trying to gain free publicity by making ridiculous claims.

What's wrong with him? Even a phrase “The Internet of Money.” now can be registered to Trademark? That's hilarious.
Also, i think this drama is very classic, just another trademark troll. I bet we know who will win this drama.

This whole case is starting to get ridiculous and stupid, for me Anthony Watson is a simple trademark troll and nothing more.
I would not worry at all, there is no way Andreas needs to be afraid of this troll.
But from the other side searching where someone said "Internet of Money" for the fist time is very problematic and I don't know if it can be done with absolute precision.

well Andreas has been around far longer than uphold. so its an easy win for andreas

after all you cant sue someone just for saying a few words. otherwise i could be sued by an american gadget company and a uk telecoms company, just by talking about apples and oranges.
should mcdonalds sue anyone that says the word im loving it.
should skittles sue anyone that says the words taste the rainbow

it would need to be proved the context of its use directly negatively impacts the company. (phishing site making exact copies to scam people), which is hard to achieve.. for instance even the eccentric Donald Trump wont sue someone just for slagging him off..

so to me its not about a lawsuit at all.. its about grabbing a big bitcoin advocates name to publicize a randomly unknown business.. hoping millions of twitter users and media readers will learn the word 'uphold' purely because its desperately trying to grab onto andrea's fame

in short alot of drama to get 15 minutes of fame.

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

How is it possible to trademark a common phrase that even a child could think up like it's not rocket science or anything. People these days are so spoilt. Well at least the lawyers must be making a killing with all the stupid lawsuits flowing around nowadays. I doubt he will pay out 1 btc bounty though.
