AMD REALEASES OPEN SOURCE 8000 SERIES DRIVERS!

What does this mean you say? I say custom drivers for bitcoin mining! Assuming 8000 series will be epic for mining, and that people will continue to interest themselves in GPU mining like me.

This is also a new turn for the electronics and PC gaming world too, want better performance in this game? Pick up the driver that this guy tuned for it, want better performance for this thing? Get that driver. Want both? Grab that one that the other guy compiled them both into.

Thoughts anyone?

Maybe for Alt-coins, but GPU mining for BTC will be obsolete by the time these come into play.

Why can't the 8000 series have native sha-256 decryption without using OCL? Even if it's not "60GH/s fast", I'm sure that would be a lot faster than current products?

I doubt it. However, it would cost more per die and require QA time and that isn't worth it to AMD.

I don't know, they sold a metric fuckton of 6xxx cards to us, they have to know that

In terms of today's Oland work, there was a simple commit to Mesa to "add support for Oland chips" inside the RadeonSI driver. This ended up being a fairly trivial commit for introducing the Oland GPU chip support, but again the RadeonSI driver is far from being feature-complete.

There was also a fairly trivial commit to the xf86-video-ati DDX for introducing Oland GPU support, which again is not really any different compared to the Southern Islands support. Likewise, a commit went into Mesa's DRM library (libdrm) too.

Personally I think they've taken notice from 6xxx series and made gpu computing power one of the main priorities. Just look at the jump from the 6970 to the 7970 in terms of hash rate. Following on the rise I predict 800mhash from the 8970 maybe 8950

The increase in hashrate was because of the new GCN architecture of the 7xxx cards. IIRC, the 8xxx cards will also be using the same GCN. I actually don't expect to see any massive improvements in BTC mining (think 5xxx -> 6xxx improvements).

IMO, I blame the increase from 1536 shaders to 2048 shaders
