The popular Bitcoin exchange and wallet provider, Coinbase, has begun asking for LinkedIn information as part of their ‘Know Your Customer’ programme, for users who use the platform for trading.

I see it more like "Screw users privacy" programme .

I'm pretty sure having someone's name and photo id to prove it is them is more than enough to be in accordance of any KYC laws. But hey, if you can take an arm and a leg from someone why not go for the rest?

This will only get worse. Anyone expecting any sort of privacy beyond their local Bitcoin wallet is delusional, your privacy ends as soon as your Bitcoins enter a website that doesn't let you to use a VPN/TOR and that asks for your details, but that's what you get if you want total mainstream adoption I guess. You can always bypass it if you really want to tho.

This is why I use private buyers when I want to sell BTC for any fiat. If a private buyer asks me for a strand of my dna then I can simply go to another one.

They already tie you to a phone number, bank account and physical address for their verification process. LinkedIn as well? That just seems invasive, not only is there absolutely no need for integration or association between these two services (I don't think people routinely transact on LinkedIn, but I could be wrong). Also, LinkedIn is non verified, user submitted info, why is it even useful? If they were gonna offer this maybe it would have been better with Facebook, or Google +

This is a little much.  This seems to be happening more. I am thinking of some apps or websites that you cannot sign up for unless through your facebook account. This will be the norm soon where social media accounts will be a part of identification.

I love Bitcoin

I think coinbase is going to pretend like paypal, just like paypal is annoying its users on a number of things.

But for coinbase I have a suggestion; that people will leave you, so stay competitive with bitcoin wallets

Is this an April Fool's joke?  Cheesy I think it's a bit cheeky of Coinbase to be asking for users LinkedIn accounts on top of the already submitted KYC info. By the way the article recommends using Mycelium Trader and Paxful due to their lowered personal identification requirements. I didn't know about  Paxful and I am going to check it out right now. It's great when I am finding out about new Bitcoin exchanges.

That is definitely no April fool hoax!
There was a discussion about that on reddit already 4 days ago.

Maybe.

Seems unlikely to me.

Until I see proof, I'll continue to assume that such reports are lame attempts at FUD.

yeah that's true, coinbase always have weird problem so far, after some couple month ago people report to this forum that his wallet closed without any explanation, and then coinbase not receive any funds from gambling address, and now more problem appear. but i think this will not make people lost trust to coinbase.

Ha! I have no idea why people use Coinbase. Nothing surprises me with them any more, still don't understand why people use them. I've said it before but they go against EVERYTHING that uᴉoɔʇᴉq was intended to be.

Edit -

I have a Coinbase account.

I've never been asked for LinkedIn Information at all.

Oh! I still don't like them any way Grin

What's this nonsense? I'm not on Linkedin, and very few people I work with is. That network is certainly big in the US, but it doesn't enjoy the same success everywhere in the world. So I guess coinbase is only interested in gaining clients from the US corporate world.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.
