It spread via something called the grapevine. Satoshi published the bitcoin with paper and posted on one of the crypto mailing lists, people made comments and downloaded the software, Hal received the first transaction and the word spread though all the friends these guys had who were really into the whole concept of a decentralised currency.

It probably started to spread into the mainstream from other finding articles in tech mags and online forums.

The concept needs to be good for it to spread via word of mouth and that's why Bitcoin spread so quickly, relativily speaking, that is.
It was just the right time for it to shine, with the economic crisis.

Plus, I think many programmers were just interested in the technical aspects behind it.
