You need to try each one going from lowest to highest voltage until its stable. One of my 290 is very stable the lowest voltage, another one is only stable at the highest voltage. Check your ASIC quality in GPUz

Thanx for trying to help.
For my home computer , mining with two gpus , I would like to get the less noise possible , so I need the lowest temp , that imply lower voltage I think.
Could you confirm my understanding in the reading of the files name ?
=> MBA_C6711101-100_K2_AGR_STILTMP_V48.zip (DPM7 - 1.1000V) is the less voltage available.

That would be correct - IME even the highest-voltage Stilt BIOS ran a TON cooler than the stock bios, I've not had enough time to play around with the others to date.
The x.xxxxV at the end is the "default" voltage for that BIOS version, lower is better for cool but too low = card don't work right, crashes a lot, etc - and that will vary quite a bit with the specific card due to manufacturing variation.

Could you help me ?
I've tried another bios , the V40.zip (DPM7 - 1.1500V) but still not very good.
Temperature didn't went down , maybe slightly higher !
Wattage is higher for same hashrate as stock.

When I check voltage with afterburner , my two r9 290 flashed with same V40 bios show different voltage : one close to 1047mv and the other one à 1146mv !
I don't understand why , it's not normal , and maybe the lack of improvement come from here ?

After the BIOS flash, you need to unintall the driver software, and reinstall it, also the MSI afterburner.

Since none of the stores seem to have 480s in stock, I've been looking on CL for used items.  What is the expected hashrate of an R9 390X, and power draw?  Worth it at $200?

I get 58mh for 2 r9 390s

I spend 500 watts.

I get 73 mh for 3 rx 480s

I spend 430 watts

Kilo17 has some new 480s he is an honest guy

I would spend the extra for the 480s and save the power.

But my power is not cheap for my eth rigs.

If you have really cheap power the r9 390s may be better. Your power over 11 cents get the rx 480 from kilo17

out of the box, no mods or OC, 6 x RX480 eats 1250watts, on my EVGA1300 quite steadily hashing 24.5 x 6 = 147MHs-148MHs. Couldnt wait to undervolt this setup and save on power even more - maybe under 1000 watts - I will be happy.

on the other hand, 5 x 390s (-100mV undervolt, slightly OC) eats 1450watts on my EVGA1600, but rock solid stable at 149MHs-150MHs. Edit: Had a 6 x 390 config for awhile but it just exceeds 1600w and I didn't want to strain the expensive PSU.

finally, 6 x Nanos with Heliox ROM Mod -125mV, 1250watts hashing 175MHs, rock stable.

As far as raw power is concerned, the 390s is very good and very quiet (MSI 390 with Twin Frozz fans).

But the 480s are really excellent - as good as Nano at half the price.

Yeah  it is easy to drop the  power down with wattman.

 with a simple wattman adjustment:

My rig with 3 rx 480s does 73mh at 442 watts.   6.05 watts an mh

With more complex tweaks I can do 67mh at 390 watts that is 5.82 watts a mh

I have seen some get to 5 watts a mh with all 4gb cards

My guess is that power saved with the 4GB model because it runs at 1750 MHz.  To make it look like 4GB, and still have good performance, they just use half the memory rows.  If they only used half the memory chips, or half the memory banks, the performance would be crap.

Point being... do you really need to flash the 4GB bios to get the power savings?  Just wondering all this out loud.

No I can get to 269-273 watts for 2 8gb 480s and do  45mh
or do 297-312 watts for 2 8gb and do 49mh

or stay stock at 350-360 watts and do 49mh

the setting I use for my 8gb cards is saving 50watts and maybe ½ mh is lost

I don't complain and I am happy with it.

But I wish I had been able to buy 10 4gb cards at 199.99 each  simply for the 2000 dollar cost for 10

I have 5  8gb cards at a cost of 1300  or a 260 price each vs 200 each.

Do you overclock your graphics cards? Did you use the latest driver which distribute the power properly?

Things have now regressed. I think my Mobo and CPU are struggling to boot all 3 cards. I have an older Z87 chipset and i7 875k CPU. It will not consistently recognize the cards. PCIe speeds are suspect at this point. I have to manually set Gen3 speed. It will not accept auto detect, nor and speeds below Gen3

Yes, I've abandoned using more than 2 cards with the Z87 board.  I cannot get it to post any more, no matter what I do.

So....  Any opinions out there on on a more modern motherboard?  I've seen the H81 Pro BTC, but the price of those seem to be largely inflated for obvious reasons.  Is that still the one to get, or are there other gems out there?

I tested a lot of mobos.

What socket is the i7 875k CPU?

Also do you have any CPUs other then that?

Yah, it's fairly old at this point: LGA1156.  It's a Lynnfield: pre-SandyBridge.

I have a SandyBridge 2500K, but that is my "daily driver".  I assume I'll be buying something newer.

I came across this H170A board :  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157683
And a CPU like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G3KG0145

Have you tested anything similar to this?

I like running windows 7 the asus boards form the 170 series were okay.

but my favorite z170 board is this one

I got this on sale for 110 from newer:
It fits 4  rx 480's on the board.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138421&cm_re=biostar_z170-_-13-138-421-_-Product

I run it with an i5 6500t
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-OEM-SR2L8-I5-6500T-6NM-Cache-and-up-to-3-1GHz-/122002379418?

I also have this cpu

I also have a g4400

and this seller on ebay has a g4400  I would offer him 49

Hey Phil how's the heat with four video cards so close together.  I've had it with PCIe risers.  I've gone through so many bad risers and countless hours troubleshooting them that I'm pretty fed up with them.  I'm probably not going to build another rig any time soon but I'm keeping my options open.

well it is all 480's  I use 540 watts to get 95mh

I am using a corsair ax760 plat.

I will take some photos.

this board is really good in an open case.

four card rig room is 84f

the secret is the spacers from the hdmi jacks  of the video cards they allow for air to reach the fans

infra red gun reads 43 to 49 c

hottest card is 72c   worst hasher is 22h as it is the one that drives the display
