I incline to agree that Litecoin is the Second to bitcoin. Doge and Ether (if you consider it as one of the digital currency) have unlimited supply and the value of each coin will decrease eventually. The limited supply, which is one of the most important features, of bitcoin and litecoin will make them long term storage of value.

If I remember correctly, the second was Namecoin. But this is not supposed to be a real currency, more like a project to replace DNS. For example look how thepiratebay.se was recently seized, this shows how DNS system is centralized and how it potentially will be rigged in the future. Thus a distributed alternative was born.

None know the correct answer for it. Bitcoin is the first among the digital currency, and the later went unnoticed as those days price were not much. For this reason I believe only bitcoin developers might known about the very next coin that existed following bitcoin.

I know ZCash was around a while not sure

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the world, and lose his own soul?

Currently USD is the first currency and all other currencies are trying to get the place from it and become the first currency, and if any of them get success to become first then definitely USD will come at second, So i will say that if bitcoin became the first then second will be USD.

But how many was born and died? How a crypto can die?

I would say that if mining comes to a complete halt, that could be compared to a heart flat-line - or the equivalent of crypto death. This occurs primarily in currencies that were created solely for the purposes of P&D.

Coins need a reason to exist; this brings about community support and growth. I think the correct flight path is one which preserves protocol integrity, respects consensus, and comes with built-in consumer appeal.
