(TorrentFreak) Pirates Frustrated After TV Release Groups Swap .MP4 for .MKV

Quote
After years under a previous regime, several prominent Internet piracy groups have adopted a new set of TV-release standards. The rules will go into effect this weekend, but several groups have already made the switch, frustrating many bewildered pirates who must now play .MKV instead of .MP4 files.

The rules:
https://torrentfreak.com/images/nfo-tvx2642k16.txt
https://torrentfreak.com/images/nfo-sdtvx2642k16.txt

Myself i am fine with it..
MKV containers have worked great for me and stuff like MKVToolNix are awesome !

Some groups have been doing this for years too..
Many groups switched to that already for TV-SD DVDRips.
Such as Family Guy or The Cleveland Show, ATHF or many others.

PS:
In case it was not obvious this is raising a big stink !
For many years now i have seen console users complain they can not
stream MKV files to many of the older consoles..
there for they proclaim Matroska files are garbage and bash them.

Personally, with my experience with MKV and MP4 files, there's really not much of a difference between them. It's just that the MKV container holds better support for some features e.g. subtitles, etc.
I do get the frustration over switching from MP4 TO MKV probably because of, for some console users they cannot play the video. For all I know not a single console yet supports MKV.

Haven't heard of that and no experience with it as well since I'm a little too poor to buy the consoles and check it out, and a tad bit lazy to google it up  Grin

MKV is a great file format. If problems arise then the k-lite codec pack is the way to go. Never had problems with that.

Personally Iam wondering when file formats are used that take way more storage space and bandwith than needed.

It was bound to happen since x264 is getting replaced with x265 so mkv is the way forward now

So far i am hearing that x265 produces a slightly blurry result comparing to x264.
Some people out there think blurry is better and proof of this is get any Picture or Video
conversion tool and look at what algo is default.. it's usually Lancosz <-- blurry BS
First thing i do is look for Bicubic or better.
This is going to give you a more accurate and sharper result.
If i wanted blurring i would add post processing to things.

Then we have the encode times.. like 7 hours vs 70 hours  Cheesy

I think the x265 encoder (best i can tell right now) needs more work.
It's not ready for mainstream adoption when encodes times are that long.
And many people are not happy with the result either.

It appears to be over rated like when x264 came out.
Noob encoders proclaimed it was "magic" then would go on to butcher videos with it..
Such as taking a Simpsons episode and cutting it down to 55mb each show. (i seen on TPB way back)

MKV has great tools too.. Mkvtoolnix and related programs rock !
I am not sure if x265 is properly supported with it though. (and the scene rules change advise using it)

And the other thing i wanted to mention is i dropped using codec packs many years ago..
Last one i kept using was Shark's Codec pack.
What did i use instead ? Lav Filters

I value streamlined stuff with crap removed.
I had no need for extra splitters etc int he codec packages for example.
I eventually realized all i need for a high quality advanced PC setup was..
The "LAV Codec" package (either BIN or Installer) either x64 or x86.
The i just had to disable "Windows Media Foundation" on Windows 7 x64 using Win7DSFilterTweaker.
Then i needed to install the .NET thumbnails program called "Icaros"

Install LAV then check "ALL" ..there ya go SD to 4K support with extensive hardware acceleration options Smiley
I have used DXVA with AMD or Cuda with Nvidia or QuickSync with Intel and they all worked great.
The video codec package includes extra post processing options exclusive to LAV
Such as converting to 30 or 60 FPS.
A recent version even added the option to specify what GPU to use..
I use to use for ages Nvidia for my Videos and my Intel QuickSync 4770k Hasswell integrated GPU for my Desktop.

SO i never looked back.. it's been years and the LAV package is simply brilliant stuff !
I use Windows 7 x64 to run Windows Media Center (forcing x64 WMP + Codecs)
I like setting up my own folder library hierarchy in WMC and made a remote with my gamepad + xpadder.

Draw backs ? No Sub's support (if needed i just use VLC for subtitles + videos)

Use what you like guys but i give two thumbs and a penis up to LAV Grin

I also not recently figured out how to install the Doby Hometheater program with my Realtek Audio codec
Combined with LAV i got some pretty decent sound plus options being run to my house AMP.
Audio normalization is a huge bonus !

And HDMI out to my 32 inch Flat screen TV

Interested ?

Install these..
1 LAV Codecs = http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=156191
2 MS Disabler = http://www.codecguide.com/windows7_preferred_filter_tweaker.htm
3 Thumbnailer = http://shark007.net/forum/Thread-Archived-posts

- Install LAV and select "ALL"
- Run Win7DSFilterTweaker and disable all Windows Media Foundation options (in MS Codec Tweaks)
- Run Icaros and activate it (if there is a video format you don't see thumb's for check if the extension is in Icaros)
- right click a video file and select open with "always" x64 if you want to (or google for registry tweak to force it)

That is it.. You now have global support for EVERYTHING conceivable even 4k content.
And the quality options you get with this can't be compared by other options Wink

That is how i do it ..the right way  Cool

PS:
The tools i suggested are Free and clean.

Videolan seems to have a problem with MKV, at least on my computer. Actually it´s unplayable at all. It seems to be a recent problem, a few years ago it played easily. Any remedy?

I never understood that either. What the heck is cool with that? It was implemented in games too. It made framerates lower and you did not get a clear image when moving. That is not natural. It would be natural when you wouldn't move your eyes at all. But in fact your eyes would stop on certain points and focus on them. Not possible with that stupid blur.

Well, might be some people only use it because it is "in".

I had those too once but I think I had to reinstall klite because lav did not work some formats.

I'm not sure anymore but I think avstodvd could not convert some videos with it. Not sure anymore.

It's probably your crappy pc. If you're talking about VLC it is notorious to play pretty much everything.

That's correct. The only thing that I don't like with VLC is that it is quite CPU hungry. Compared to MPC at least. I like media player classic the most as a player.

Why on earth would I lie about VLC not playing those MKV files here? It doesn´t play those files. Since you people don´t have a clue about this I checked and it is an known issue. So, bye bye.

Rizla2345, be careful with posting more than one consecutive post. I was banned for that one time already. Didn't know it is a rule that can lead to forum bans.

By the way, he did say that he NOT says that you are lying. Do you have the newest VLC version?

My VLC never had any problems with playing MKV files. In fact, most of my pirated movies are in MKV and there's playing with no problems at all. However, I don't have any idea or solution to your problem. Reinstall probably? If not, you might want to change into a different player.
