The other day I was talking to a die-hard republican friend of mine, and he was absolutely convinced that the Republicans were the main proponents of the civil rights movement and that Democrats were the only pro-segregation force that was stopping it from happening.

Although, much of the Western world's governments at least, particularly here in Australia, are eager to kowtow and follow the American government.   Certainly here, our politicians seem to look up to those in America as something to aspire to.
