But are they actually used other than just holding for staking. The people with the large quantities are just waiting for price to raise to their target then they will dump and it will become worthless.

That is a good question,
the answer is they can be used for anything that a PoW coin is used for, but at a substantially lower cost to operate.
But you the PoS user can actually get rewarded for supporting & participating in the network.

Crypto is still a niche market , and General Populace use is years away.
Once the PoS coin does achieve Utility , the dump that crushes the price can't happen, as someone will have a use for it.
In Fact, I would dare say some of the PoS communities will never allow their coin to hit 0,
One example is ZEIT , if someone was dumb enough to dump all of the way down to 1 litoshi, I and a few others would buy the entire marketcap at that price, because we recognize it's Future Potential. After that our coin would never again sell for less than $1 , and we would immediately go directly into the remittance business. 
Conversely if a PoW coins price fails dramatically, the asic miners turn their equipment off and the PoW network grinds to a halt.
It only takes 3 PCs running a PoS coin to keep it's network running, cost wise it can be run forever at very little costs.   

 

FYI:
Even BTC & LTC are only mainly being traded against Fiat & other Cryptos, remove alt coins from their trading and watch their trading volume dry up over night.
When the Public buys Gas & Groceries with BTC, then we have Public adoption , around that same time is when you will see the capital influx like out of the roaring 1920s.

Yeah, I have the same thought.  I just get the feeling that holding onto a coin and expecting a return by just letting it sit there is waaaay too good to be true.  What am I missing here?  

1. Some users complain about the amount of memory or drive space or CPU resources that a coin may take up.
You do need to make sure your PC meets the growing hardware requirements,
Example , some of the older coins, require a minimum of 1 gig or ram per wallet, and will not run without it.
Also downloading & installing Bootstraps or Blockchain Snapshots are required, unless you want to wait a week or more to sync for the 1st time.

2. Each PoS is coin specific the different stake ages and other specs can have a big difference on your ability to stake.
Also some imposed a max cap per stake , limiting your amount per block.
Keeping up with multiple implementations so each coin stakes to the best of it ability is time consuming , if done correctly.
(You will need to learn How to use Coin Control , so you receive as much compound interest as possible.)

3. You are competing with other users, so if you don't keep enough coins per block , you will not stake.
(Amount varies per coin)

4. Keep up with the Coin Forum in case there is an update required.

So not as easy as some think.  
It is like anything else , the more time you put into it , the better your results.

The field is wide and varies.

You have:

-super high inflation 'Hyper Stakes' they create an active staking network but the spot price is wild.
-low inflation ... i personally like the 1-5% rate
-long hold before you can stake
-long confirm before you can spend
-quick to stake, low min. holds
-fixed amount per block rewards
-reduced over time % rates
-FLT did something with money velocity (sorry never played with that one)
-block spliting
-heavy memory use (this is kinda like high diff or cost of electricity)
-low memory use, so you can still use the PC/laptop as it stakes
-or super popular (likely un-stake-able to new guys)

My personal goal is to find the staking coin that has low interset yield, fast staking, easy staking so if you invest under $100 you will likely be able to stake a block in under 1 hour, fair market exposure, dev, community, web resources, a Kiklo's Premium Bootstrap.dat listing, and maybe an Android app.

Still haven't found that coin yet.

But part of the goal of TALK is to find the best POS coins, if not make it ourselves.

I'd avoid coins that are mostly dominated by staking pools ... 3rd party/hacker risk could cause major issues.

Hyperstake is a good example, it has a 750% interest rate per year, but you will only earn ~68.43% this year and it will decline yearly.
It has a Max Cap and High Difficulty so that 750% will never be achieved.

How Does Inflation Control Work?
Inflation control limits the maximum amount you can stake to 1,000 HYP for each block. This means that you will want to split your HYP blocks into the appropriate amount of HYP if you want to receive 750% reward, or else you will have your reward capped at 1,000 HYP. Reward is calculated by the following formula:
Code:   Reward = min(HYPamount * (7.5/365) * daysToStake, 1,000)

Many of us have come to the conclusion that with such high difficulty, it is worth using bigger block size that will definitely hit max reward of 1,000, but will stake faster because of large size. I've been staking Vcash for several months now and I thought I recommend it.
-Energy efficient Proof-of-stake algo with 0.7% interest rate.
-Low inflation with the minimum age 8 hours and max age of 1 year.
-Price is relatively low atm, @0.00018 is more than a decent entry price.

Yup. The difficulty has gone up so much, you get a better return trading the coins back and forth, rather than staking...
