Has anyone else been using the new test 0.8 client? I keep my wallet on an encrypted drive so the I/O speedup helped me out a lot. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=129861.0

I downloaded the linux version and ran the prebuilt binary and it converted my entire database to the new format in a couple hours and then synced the rest of my outstanding blocks in what I think was half the time the 0.7 client would have taken.

Hmm, I might need to get this for my laptop, it hasn't synced even though it was on the past two days.

How much faster is syncing?

As a benchmark for those who are interested, I installed 0.8.0 on a 5 year old 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB graphics processor running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5.  The total synchronization time starting on 2013-02-19 was 22 hours, and the total disk space used is 6.4 GB

Disk usage:
Code:
$ pwd; du -h
~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin
 31M    ./blocks/index
6.2G    ./blocks
193M    ./chainstate
10.0M   ./database
6.4G    .

I'm waiting a week or two before installing.

There seem to be many changes in this version. So it's possible there are problems yet undiscovered.

Since the bitcoin client handles real money I would call that reasonable, not conservative

For now, I setup the new client with an empty wallet. Syncing was fast and my HD light is not on nearly as much any more. I'll probably transfer a few bitcoins over in a few days.

Took me just over 2.5 hours to sync the blockchain from scratch, very impressive!  Shocked
