Welcome back ;-) They've removed generating coins from the client because the implementation was CPU based and has become useless. Currently, serious mining is done with high-end GPUs. There's a couple of special purpose mining tools ... see https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Category:Miners (I think DiabloMiner, Phoenix and Poclbm are noteworthy ... but don't take my word for it, as I don't have that great a GPU ATM, I'm not mining much myself).

Right i am using my ati 5670 to get around 56k hashes/sec so am i good to keep using the older version? Will it work with the current system version? Hate to solve another block just to get 0 btc cause my software is out of date And thanks for the info. Icon Hk

Your node software is fine. But you will never generate a block with that card. Best to join a pool.

I have 20000khash/sec (20mhash/sec) ... and my understanding is that to really do mining you should have a few hundred MHash (I think 500 MHash/sec can be considered "nice"). As kjj mentioned - joining a pool makes sense for most people. Personally, whenever I start mining (depends on when the next model of the Mac Pro becomes available ... I'm not gonna buy a computer just for mining), I'd join: EcoCoin - Offset your carbon footprint! Profits buy trees and rainforest http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=14343.0

Hk I didn't mean that your card was never capable of generating coins. I'm saying that between now and the end of time, it is pretty unlikely that it will generate any more.

Ya i understand its the nature of bitcoin to gain in complexity as the chain gets larger. To be honest i wasn't expecting to generate any coins, well maybe 50 in a year. The thing is i got lucky and generate 2 50btc under a week of each other Again thanks all for the help/info its just i leave 1 pc on all the time to file serve and hate to waste the power 24/7 for nothing so its either SETI@home or Bitcoin, at least i can earn some $$ with bitcoin Hk

I thought that this was a cpu miner and that if you wanted to use your gpu to mine, you'd need to get a separate, capable miner?

I'd still just use a pool. That way you will earn the actual value of the card for sure, which is probably more than what you would earn in the self generation lottery.
