So as the title says I'm just getting started with bitcoin, and I've been looking around at hardware guides. I am not intending to make this into something I will try to make a living off of, I intend to do this more casually, with hardware that I already have or will already buy in the future.
The question I have is: I own both a 6770 and a 7770, originally I had two 6770's for cfx but when I had to RMA one of them they sent back a newer model 7770, so cfx went out the window. I could have sent it back to get my 6770 back but I figured eventually I would have to upgrade anyways. what I want to know is if it is safe to plug that 6770 in and not cfx it but use it for mining? will this cause problems with my rig, or is it safe?
I haven't been able to find information on whether or not this is possible, I'm not sure If I just haven't tried using the proper search string, or if it's just something nobody really even thinks of trying. But I have this 6770 here that I can't do anything with normally, so if I can plug it in and dedicate it to mining, that would be fantastic.
thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. *bows down in reverence to the masters*

Yes, you can have both generations of cards in the same system, and selectively use one, or both for mining.
Do note, unless your electricity is free you likely will be spending more on power then you will be earning through mining.

Especially as the ASICs are rolling out and increasing the difficulty.

Luckily I have a flat rate electricity bill, otherwise yeah I wouldn't likely bother with the mining itself, but I figure between both cards I could at least probably pay my game subscriptions. This is however fantastic news for me. thank you for clearing that up. Edit: yep just plugged it in, crossed my fingers and prayed that my computer didn't explode, and well, I'm still here. so again, thank you!

Also, as ASICs roll out, you will be causing more damage to your cards by mining than the mining will be worth. Running the cards at 100% 24x7 is quite taxing.

Hmm would it help prolong the life of my cards if I underclocked or throttled them? As I said I'm not looking to make a living out of this. if I can mine 1 bitcoin a month out of the two of them working together it will be good enough for me.

Soon, when all BFL ASIC and all ASICMINER hardware are working, you probably will need more than 4Ghash/s for 1btc a month

Yeah, no. Those two cards together get you like 400 Megahash/s IF they're perfectly configured and running overclocked. With ASICS coming online, tbcoins scenario is rather likely. So you'd be lucky getting 0,0001 coins a months.
