According to the latest stats from the Indian government, some 12.5 million out of the 1.3 billion citizens paid income tax in 2015. That represents somewhere around 0.98% of the population. This is the first time in history that the number of tax payers have dipped below 1% of the population. India might be the only country where 0.98% of the population subsidizes the remaining 99.02% with the taxes. (In India, farmers, businessmen, politicians.etc don't need to pay their taxes).
Also, it is quite funny to note that an IT professional with a salary of $5,000 per year need to pay the tax, while a farmer with an income of $5,000,000 per year is exempted from the taxes.

I think IT professionals get more income because of their intelligence. then if they should pay taxes, their income will decrease. and I thought if we get much income, we should pay taxes, but it's not the rule in India. maybe it's good idea to be a farmer in India

So they are overburdened with taxes (in addition to the income tax, there are other taxes such as the labor tax). On the other hand, the farming lobby is quite strong. Large-scale farming is extremely profitable in India. You will be provided with free electricity, subsidized fertilizer and pesticides.etc.

Politicians are exempt? Does India levy any other types of tax such as property tax or VAT?

Indian politicians get most of their income in the form of commissions and bribes. So obviously they don't have to pay taxes over that income. And regarding property tax and VAT, India is having one of the highest rates for these taxes. In addition to all this, there are dozens of other taxes such as service tax, octroi, state taxes.etc.

India is the best example for showing us how a country can be so ridiculous. Unfortunately, I need to travel to India regularly, for business purposes. Every time, it is a torture to get around the red tape and bureaucracy. Services are overpriced and lacks quality. A 512 Kbps (64 KB ps) connection costs around $25 per month (that too prone to disruptions), while in my country I can get a 300 Mbps connection for similar amount.

Stats out of India I would take lightly, hell most stats anywhere for that matter. That said India's tax collection is direly in need of a push in the right direction.
1 percent seems pretty low though.

Tax evasion is a problem everywhere. Even western nations such as the United States and Germany lose billions of USD as a result of tax avoidance. However, the problem is more acute in developing nations such as India and China. India is the worst, because the entire system is broken there. In other nations, at least the judiciary is free from corruption. But in India, judiciary is the most corrupt sector.

What I would really be interested in is a thread where Indians answer questions about India for us dummies. Would love to learn more about the different areas and how things work politically on a local level.

Mate,I'd love to but not many will be interested to know as their idea of India is still of 1960's where people lived in faeces.Trust me ,India can be the richest economy around if Politicians here wanted to.You can basically get away with anything in India.80% of the money in Swiss Banks is Indian Black Money which is suppose to be paid as taxes and other revenues.
