Stolen Bitcoin Advice

Hi Guys,

Unfortunately I have had 5 bitcoins stolen from my wallet. I have a bitcoin core wallet which is encrypted and hardly ever use.

I have full anti virus software on my computer and in my mind that is pretty safe. It looks like the thief tested my wallet with 2 small transactions and then took the other 4.6 bitcoins.

Obviously I am annoyed at this and want to protect the rest. This was back in November and I haven't been about since then or even used my wallet or updated it. {I have only just checked it and am updating the walled transactions now}


Please can I have advice on how to go about fully protecting this from happening again? I am not that tech savvy per say so an idiot's guide would be helpful.

Anti-virus software can not protect you from current malware. It can -at best- protect you from old malware that has been around for a while.

There is no 100% protection, the closest you can get is probably a hardware wallet.

Btw, where do you keep the rest? I would assume that the wallet is empty if the attacker knows the password to it.

If you had this amount of bitcoins, why did the f*** you didn't store it in a paper wallet?!

Search this forum or Google 'How to create bitcoin paper wallet'.You can find stepwise guide on this forum as well.If you can afford,buy a trezor wallet and keep your coins in it

Yes I was a fucking idiot but as it wasn't an online wallet I stupidly assumed there was no issue. All the horror stories I read were about online wallets.

I personally use a Trezor hardware wallet. To be honest anti virus are useless against 0 days. Although Malwarebytes is not a bad product, the only way to be sure is not to open anything that seems too good to be true

Yeah mate don't assume that your software wallet is more secure than an online wallet just because it's on your machine and you are the only one in charge of its security. It's not an easy task to keep your coins safe on a device that is connected to the Internet. I suggest buying a Ledger Nano hardware wallet as it's around $40 or you could move your funds to a paper wallet if you want the cheapest solution. Just make sure you generate and store your private keys on a secure device not connected to the Internet.

i prefer a dedicated desktop or laptop than a third party hardware wallet, just build your own server for your bitcoin client, and don't install anything else, besides the client itself

Well for once, dont watch porn on the PC you have bitcoins.

It's a 99% proven fact that most viruses come from porn sites popups ads or infected websites.

Create bitcoin wallet and store it in hardware wallet, paper wallet or 100% offline PC (never connect to PC or plugged by infected USB).

I think we all agree that running anything from any device automatically once it is plugged in is a very bad idea.

If that is possible, disable it as soon as possible. It is because of such security holes no one should use Windows for serious purposes.

You run viruses even if you do not want. The system takes care to run all them for you, the human factor can be completely ignored as it is not needed.

This is why i don't use the bitcoin it is to risky to many thiefs searching for a way
to eat your hardware wallet.
You can't just go to the police and say hi their taking my bitcoins.
just be normal and use gold!

Well I got good tips from this--I'm not a tech head so it sounds like trezor and paper wallets are the way to go.  I knew about paper wallets but had not heard a whole lot about trezors.  Thanks for the tips.
