These new cards should be announced at the AMD developer conference in three days
Let's see if these new cards have an increased stream count. Rumor says it's only a die shrink though.

With great video cards comes great power consumption.

Does anyone think that AMD (or Nvidia) is taking note of the Bitcoin mining needs?

The article says it will be 28nm technology. Even if its only a reduction of consumption and nothing else, the cards might still be interesting.

Well first if they scale the chip down it should save on electricity costs and heat.

Second I agree especially for a top end card they could easily up the price with a higher profit margin as their current cards 6990 are not in stock anywhere it seems to me with them easily selling about $1,000 when I see them on eBay.

Yeah, unfortunately this is only an announcement. Sad who knows what the mining scene will look like in q3 or whenever these come out.

AMD may have noticed but I doubt they're going to do anything. The 5xxx series are selling out because it's nearly 2 years old and they stopped making those chips long ago.

With great video cards comes great power consumption.

Why so soon?

The current 6000 generation plays all today and future games just fine.

You can not roll a BitCoin, but you can rollback some. Cheesy

Not too much info here yet but:

http://www.systemdiary.com/information-about-video-cards-amd-radeon-hd-7000/

As expected the 7990 is the top dog, a dual version of the 7970.

No core count or anything detailed except the expected transition to 28nm technology.

How is it soon?  It's just an announcement.  We likely won't see it till 4th quarter this year or quarter 1 of 2012 at the very earliest and only selected models.  By that time, there will be plenty of games coming out push hardware, especially with the increasing multi-monitor setup market. eg: Battlefield 3

no not really. 2560x1600 maxed in Crysis 2 DX11 destroys a 6970x2 setup.

This. I don't understand why graphics enthusiasts even bother with todays available cards.

Newest games simply can't be played at max. resolutions and settings, like Metro 2033. Modern GPU's are way too weak to run them (unless you crossfire/SLI 4 of them)

Maybe the 8 or 9-series cards 2-3 years down the road could run those at 60fps constant.

Graphics enthusiast = more money than sense. If you've got more money than sense and want to play Crysis 2 at max settings then you could simply run a 6970x3 setup which would give you > 60 fps.

If you're just a poor pleb who can only afford a single 6970, then you'll just have to make do with a pathetic 55 fps @ 1920x1080 for Crysis 2.

And I forgot to mention, with the increasing popularity and production thereof of 120Hz-capable LCD monitors, all the more for hasten and quickened GFX development.

Hey!! That's not all bad news! A die shrink means lower power consumption and possibly higher frequencies.

I don't see any advantages coming from faster GPU's for mining...
Difficulty will only go up after a while and we're back to square one...
