why would even such a system be successful, wouldn't the minority that invest into alternative currency be intelligent enough to research before jumping?

Because ripples are not Ripple -ripples are just the mechanism of transaction.
They are worthless but enable you to move your real money anywhere in the world.

Ripples are a ponzi, and that's their saving grace, since everyone knows they pre-mined 100 billion of these - so ripples are the worst investment in the world - they don't want us to invest. They've made it explicit. 'Don't invest in ripples, invest in ripples and make us rich'. It's built into the system.
Ironically that's why ripple may succeed.

You don't "invest" in ripple, it's not a currency. It's a debt-tracker.

I believe that Ripple is supposed to compete with Paypal and get rid of the long one-block confirmation of BTC.  One blobk in BTC can take over an hour (10 minutes is just average time). With Ripple the transaction goes through immediately.

As for the value, it is anti-spam.  So, what is the BTC cost of transactiion for anti-spam?  (0.001 BTC?? I don't know)   Ripple should be the same.  If values stays low (as it is now), an attack will occur and require a increase in the fee to make attack costly to the attacker.

We'll just see how it all plays out.  Fun stuff!!!

Hmmm ... interesting !
So, there is no point of buying/selling with XRPs (or XRP-IOUs) ? This is only used for transaction fees (and account / trust line creations) ?

Suppose now that someone starts a new Ripple network (once the server sources are released), what prevents him from giving away every 'XRP2' ?

Exactly, but some people are confusing ripple with ripples (XRP) - XRP are worthless (edit: by design) - Ripple, on the other hand, is worth looking at.

Edit 2: this is my 666 post! open the champagne everyone

Apology to rush the 5 first message on this forum.
Frustrating to not be able to participate to post worthy of your time, in time.

I would've asked Tongue

You can always ask if anyone are willing to sell some to you Grin. (not me)

That's how pricesw increase.

If this was 2010, and the giveaway was in Bitcoin, would you also have had the same attitude; "Damned, I missed the train" or would you have been smart and ask if anyone was interested in selling their 5.000 Ripple coins for $2?

I'm in the same boat, i'd like 301 (anything over 300) xrp to start um 'rippling' -- if you have any to spare:

I can only offer this screen cleaning service as repayment:

<edit>
Thank you to whoever sent me xrp!
