Zhang Shengwu, a 51-year-old farmer, received a Chinese government patent for a submarine he design and built himself for around 5,000 Yuan (€670 / $760) in the Chinese city of Maanshan in Anhui province, Thursday. Despite the small size of the submarine, which barely has enough room for one person, measuring six metres (20 ft) long and 60 cm (2 ft) wide, Zhang Shengwu received a patent certificate from the State Intellectual Property Office. The home-made vessel can only travel up to seven nautical miles per hour and dive to a depth of one metre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF_pWHBNe6o

Students Go Head to Head in Human-Powered Submarine RaceThe 12th annual International Submarine Races (ISR) took place the last week of June at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock Division. Students were given two years to build a one- or two-person human-powered submarine, which they would race along a 100 meter course in a model basin at the NSWC. Because the subs aren’t waterproof, the teams compete while wearing full scuba gear. Contestants must follow a 44-page manual, and subs generally cannot be reused from prior years. Because the race takes place every two years teams have some time to plan their vessels. It may sound like the plot of a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, but the submarine race is yet another way to get engineering students out of classrooms and into workshops—in this case, to create undersea vessels. The race was organized by the NSWC and the Foundation for Undersea Research and Education (FURE) and sponsors include the Oceanic Engineering Society of the IEEE, and the Marine Technology Society Read more at http://www.wired.com/2013/07/underwater-race/.

Lol.. a made in China submarine? Also a submarine which s not capable of diving to a depth of more than 1 meter? Chinese manufacturers are famous for plagarism, piracy, and low-quality. I just hope that this one will be free from such negative factors. And how did he managed to receive the Chinese government patent? Is this the first time that someone is manufacturing a submarine in China?

I wonder if the Chinese navy is patented as well. Or was it simply supplied by Russia?

I wonder if the Chinese navy is patented as well. Or was it simply supplied by Russia?
The Chinese have the habit of purchasing a few copies of the Russian defense equipment and then plagiarizing them. A good example is that of the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21. The Chinese purchase a few pieces of MiG-21, and after studying the aircraft, they made their own plagiarized version called Chengdu J-7. They also exported this aircraft (J-7) to other countries, earning billions of USD in revenues.

The sowjets sold them the blueprints - something which is still regulary done today in international arms industry.

Step one) Get your hacking teams to steal the blueprints from a company in another country that spent years developing the basic concepts.
Step two) Build the prototype and attribute it's originality to being produced by a farmer.
Step three) Tell the world how great your people are because some "nobody" can come up with such unique and special projects.
Now, many great things have been developed totally independently in China but it is also taking part in some very devious dealings to steal technology.

The copy/paste business is not going to continue for ever. Just wait until Donald Trump becomes the president of the United States. He will impose trade sanctions on the Chinese, if they continue with the piracy and the plagiarism. The other countries (European Union, Canada.etc) will follow suit, and China will be forced to comply.

it may not be able to go on a depth of a 10-20 feet but still making a submarine like that is a no joke. it would take a lot of time a experience to make something like that.

Can I purchase one with Bitcoin allready? Maybe it's interesting for my friends in South America. Lol... Just hope that the FBI losers don't notice your post. The Latin American drug cartels (especially those in Colombia and Panama) are using submarines to transport huge quantities of cocaine to the United States every year. So i think china people has a great determination and creativity
If they had any sort of creativity, then they would have stopped plagiarizing other people's inventions.

As far as I can tell it doesn't appear to actually submerge. It's still kinda cool but I want my 58 seconds back. And why's everyone being so nasty about the Chinese? What have they ever done to you other than slowly take over the world?
