Was BTC the first of the cryptos? If it was why did it become so popular and profitable? If it wasn't, then what was the first cryptocurrency?

There was a couple before bitcoin, hascash and digicash come to mind. There was probably a few others but cant think of them now. I think that bitcoin was the first to record all transactions on a distributed ledger and therefore solving the problem of double spends. Someone else could explain better.

AFAIK, bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency that has a blockchain that record all the txs and prevent double spendings. it is also the first decentralized currency

No,bitcoin is not the first cryptocurrency to be created. There were a few more (you can get the names easily by google search) lacking potential.More like, centralized.Bitcoin stood out because of the blockchain and public transactions.Initially ,bitcoin wouldn't gain the exposure if that huge pump wouldn't have happened. All thanks to the early adopters.

I would say Bitcoin is the first crypto to be created WITH a fully p2p decentrialised transaction chain in the form of a public ledger, and one that was actually released usable from day 1

I don't exactly have much of an idea but I'm pretty sure bitcoin isn't the first cryptocurrency. It just so happen that bitcoin was widely accepted because it was the first to have all of its transactions recorded.

In my knowledge I have known bitcoin to be the first digital currency and following bitcoin's existence large number of altcoins came into existence in which only a few survived long.

Bitcoin was one of the first decentralized cryptos to be developed iirc, if not the first, but there were other various electronic payment systems outside of the fiat real that existed before Bitcoin, such as E-Gold, if I remember the name correctly (Which was shut down recently and the creator arrested).
That is one of the beauties of Bitcoin, there is no-one to arrest, you can stop people from using it by taking out a central node.

There were plenty of attempts going back many years. bitcoin's the one that ironed out the main problems and that's why we're here today.

So far as i know Bitcoin is first crptocurrency, mostly people are saying it and i also have same thinking. Secondly, it is popular because bitcoin has a large area, instead of other currencies, so people use it more than others.

It is not the first digital currency created, however it did seem to be the best at this time. I think that the dark net using BTC as currency had a lot to do with the growing success for this currency and once others seen it is going to stick, they started to build companies around BTC.

none was decentralized, they are just like electronic fiat, so no, there was not something even remotely similar to bitcoin before its launch bitcoin is the first Thanks that's given me something to look into, how were these old attempts like digicash/hashcash, etc kept, did they use wallets and who did you have to trust if it was not decentralised? Was it designed just for banks to move their money around, these are the things i won't to know about the attempts before bitcoin, any help with some answers would be great. I will check out the above article now for a start.
