I use Multibit (classic).

I want to check that my seed works and will recover by btc in the event of failure.
How can I check my seed works?

You can create a new wallet and restore from that seed. If it works, then you will see the same addresses.

However, Multibit classic does not have a seed. Multibit HD uses deterministic keys which has the seed, but Multibit Classic does not.

Maybe Multibit HD or Electrum.

Its easy doable if you have a desktop and a laptop, which I think anyone of us has in this era of technology. I did so with my electrum 2.5.4 , I installed it in my laptop and then restored with the seed and it worked perfectly , only thing is it took some time to sync different from my desktop. I did the same with Multibit HD and it worked also perfectly although I rarely use Multibit HD  compared to Electrum. So as long as you have the seed stored in secure place and are sure only you know it , you can restore it from as many places as you like.

You can save an offline version of this website and try to check your seed https://dcpos.github.io/bip39/ at least you can get the addresses and check.
