Even if you use Bitcoin through Tor, the way transactions are handled by the network makes anonymity difficult to achieve. Do not expect your transactions to be anonymous unless you really know what you're doing.

Could this be more profitable than simply letting bitcoin use the spare cycles to generate coins?

I think this is the same as asking if there is any use of a computer better than running bitcoin, surely there is. The trick is finding ones that can be exported safely and efficiently so you can pay other people to do it for you. This means you probably need a big job too considering the overhead of setting it up.

A condor pool wherein donors are compensated for clock time via bitcoin?

"The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent meetings and conferences. The apex of the systems was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the world's central banks which were themselves private corporations. Each central bank...sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world."

Yeah, that'd involve someone
  • Making a distributed client.
  • Selling CPU cycles.
  • Distributing the income based on how many CPU cycles people donate.
Such things have been tried before. The problem is that it is hard to prevent it from being used as some kind of botnet/spamnet.  There are still very few legit buyers of such CPU cycles.
And that you need measures in place to check the result, so that people don't cheat.

Bitcoin Core developer [PGP] Warning: For most, coin loss is a larger risk than coin theft. A disk can die any time. Regularly back up your wallet through FileBackup Wallet to an external storage or the (encrypted!) cloud. Use a separate offline wallet for storing larger amounts.

This can be solved by sandboxing and giving only specific API to task developers. I think it can be done easily, because I already did this for python scripts and it worked quite well. For commercial usage maybe Java is better (high level language but good performance, possibility for GPU processing and sandboxing).

By the way there were some commercial projects like this. It always finished on low demand for this kind of processing.
