someone posted it two days ago.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1466601.0

didn't get much attention. probably because the lack of details I mentioned on that thread.
I do agree that it is a good news though.

Probably there ain't much Swiss lurking in the forum that's why almost nobody cared about this. Good news but this news itself won't do much good to bitcoin  yet it sets an example, so it is important.

Ya know, your right. This is a bigger deal than I made it out to be when I first saw it. If this sort of thing caught on broadly then bitcoin may actually become a threat to fiat. Not just an option, but an threat.

Happy to see such initiative, but I doubt that BTC payments will be very popular. Probably no more than 1% of the city population actively use BTC, and likely only small part of that 1% have any income in bitcoins. If you don't earn any, it's not convenient to buy BTC just to pay with it.

But I understand the goal is to attract fintech  businesses to the city and not just to boost the income.

Still a great news.

yes, that what i was thinking this could screw fiat for good, if it catch enough interest from the big guys, entering the public zone like that might put bitcoin on a new level of acceptance

i hope it will spread like that to other countries

This won't be a threat for fiat. Zug won't hold their BTC. I Think they will exchange them into CHF and will never actively use BTC.

Zug only needs positive publicity. They want to be an important player in crypto.
Particularly after the end of the "Bankgeheimnis" and now the Panama Papers.

Nevertheless it is really nice to see things like that. a few years ago this was impossible.

Yeah, hopefully they market it well to their citizens so they that there will be awareness of it. Hopefully, there will be enough people who use the bitcoin option to where it becomes a success and hopefully it catch on and lead other small towns to try/implement it.

It doesn't directly affect me in a positive way but hopefully this might get some better media attention in Switzerland. Anything that can attrect more people to invest in bitcoin is a positive for us.

Well I don't know how many of you read the original article, but it isn't like a large city where people will be able to pay for their services online through some sort of system. They said that payments will be made in a townhouse sort of building, and it will be all done fairly manually.

It's a good step in the right direction, but there isn't enough autonomy for the system to really work they way it would on a large scale, like something we would see in a real, large-scale city.

From Little Things Big Things Grow, even though it's not a large scale but we should appriciate the  major of the city to their openness to the new technologies and even expressed early on their own experiences. And it's a good news for the community to be honest
hoping bitcoin will be more adopted by mass

It's a great move but people don't want to spend their coins on stuff that actually makes them happy, let alone the local lawnmower tax. Can you imagine how miserable you'd feel if you paid it just before an epic price explosion?

Yeah, that might be a potential reason of why the project fails. Why give your precious Bitcoin to the government, when they accept shoddy fiat as well? Nonetheless it is still a good move and is great publicity for Bitcoin - especially to counteract the money-laundering-drugs-crime-BS frenzy that certain mass media publish frequently. It lends a lot of credibility to the currency in the eyes of the ordinary citizen.

Probably the intiative was started by one of the Bitcoin companies that are located in Zug.

Interesting news. I suppose if it gets used enough, it could leak into other use cases in the city. That's pretty unlikely though. Encouraging to see it being put to use for things other than transactions over the internet, nonetheless.

This is pretty cool and again underscores the risk to NYC and the US of being left behind in attracting the best crypto talent if they don't up their game on regulating it right and leniently

It's mentioned in the article that Zug is a well-known financial hub in Switzerland and companies like Xapo, Monetas and ShapeShift have offices located in the proximity to the city and I guess it's a natural move for the city officials to pilot a project like that. I think they want to promote Bitcoin in the region so more fin-tech companies become interested in the Blockchain technology. What do you think is the reason for limiting the Bitcoin payments to just 200 francs though?
