Are pretty much all of the altcoins mined on GPU rigs at this point?
Is it getting to the point that any of the altcoins will be mined on ASICs, or will it stay GPU?
(Do altcoins prevent the use of ASIC mining purposely? I know Zcash will attempt to do this.)

This also makes me think, could there ever be a way to re-use old bitcoin mining gear to mine alt-coins, or are they built too specific to be moved to another coin?

gpu will always be alive, gpu is a self-sustaining world, new altcoin will always be asic resistant if needed, remain with gpu mate, asic is for big guy with plenty of money and i bet that is not really profitable for them

No SHA256 or Scrypt based altcoin can be mined profitably or even CLOSE to profitably on GPU based hardware.

X11-based coins still are, but there is at least one legit and one potentially legit ASIC starting to be sold for X11 which will probably kill GPU mining fairly soon.

Coins based on all other algorythms are either CPU-mined or GPU-mined at this time - but that is no guarentee that such a coin can be PROFITABLY mined.

There isn't enough market in most coins to support the cost of developing an ASIC for them - Ethereum in theory could be an exception, but it is going purely POS probably in the next year or so, which isn't enough TIME to develop an ASIC for it AND be able to make ROI on such a device before the change to POS makes such an ASIC 100% worthless.

ASIC can not be moved to a different algorythm - they are SPECIFIC to the algorythm they are designed for - though it's possible (and in the case of Gridseed it's been DONE a couple times) to design a chip to do more than one algorythm (I'm not sure but I think that BeLink X11 miner might also do X13 and X15, since X13 and X15 are no more than X11 with additional steps added would make it fairly easy to support all three) - BUT any such ASIC would never work on an algorythm it wasn't specifically designed for.

There's a REASON the EFF never went Bitcoin mining with Deep Crack.....

Thanks for the replies! I appreciate the info.

I'm going to do some more research on algorithms/ encryption used for specific coins.
(This is half of the reason I'm interested in bitcoin. I believe blockchain encryption will be used in many things in the future and is a cool topic to research!)

Altcoins can mean SHA256, Scrypt, X11 or Etherhash aka Dagger.

Sha256 and scrypt coins and i think recently x11 has asics.

Certain coins like XMG or HODL or cpu only, not sure if xmg is still cpu only.
The rest algos are using Gpus as interest has not been high enough to warrant people to design asics for them
