Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

Thank you all for the overwhelming ammount of replies, for now, I believe I have found what I am looking for but if you fell the need to pm me, please include 'first message' as well as quote my replies to you in your responses so they don't get lost in the mix,
