A self-confessed hacker who sought a million-dollar Bitcoin payment in exchange for then-US Presidential candidate Mitt Romney's tax records has been found guilty of extortion and fraud.

In August 2012 Michael Mancil Brown, 37, sent a letter to one of Romney's accountants, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), claiming to have hacked the company's servers and obtained the tax records of Romney and his wife Ann. He demanded a million-Bitcoin ransom.

At the time Romney was three months away from the presidential election and had been criticized for only releasing two years of tax returns, showing he paid about 15 per cent tax. Brown claimed to have the tax returns pre-2010 and said he offered similar terms to the local Democratic and Republican parties.

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Satoshi did a lot of off-forum communication, some of which a lot of us still have in archive. I did contact the author of this article and gave them some clues to check for to see if it is really him. So far, no response, but no surprise after all these years, people have published many stories about finding the real Satoshi. I contact them, offer up some useful info not available on the Internet and usually the investigation falls through as the supposed Satoshi can't answer any questions from the past about interactions with other members here. The real Satoshi could contact any of us directly with a "I'm alive" message if he wanted to, that would clear up confusion quickly.

Maybe Michael can plead bargain down his sentence given the above.

I went to see Michael in Franklin, TN, spending some time with him en route to further Down South. At first, I was at the wrong home at the end of a cul-de-sac, whereupon the black gentleman informed me that I wanted the end house two cul-de-sacs over, giving me reason to believe that the neighborhood knew of him. Mr. Brown came across as a very nice person and welcomed me back anytime. I wish him well in his sentencing.
