How to overclock in Linux?

Hi!

Please, is there a way how to overclock the GPU clock above the BIOS limit of the card, without flashing the card?

I know I can used AMDOverdriveCtrl to lower memory clocks, but my 5830 cards cannot get GPU clock above 900 MHz.

Under Windows XP using MSI AfterBurner I was able to run the cards at 1030 MHz.

How is it possible that there is a software way in Windows, but not in the Linux? Why AMDOverdriveCtrl does not go up the 900 MHz?

If the BIOS flashing is the only way to go, is there some nice tutorial how to perform it? What are the risks?

No.

There are several threads in this forum on it using various ways; Using WINE, using FreeDOS on a bootable USB stick, etc.  Just poke around.

The risk is bricking your card if the flash fails for whatever reason.

Bricking's not that likely, can always reflash as long as you've got a spare video card around...

He asked about the risk, not about how to recover from said risk.  But you're right, so I'll rephrase...

The risk is rendering your card useless unless you have the appropriate hardware on hand to overcome a bad flash.

Ya...... throwing the word "bricking" around is kinda silly.  It suggests the card would be about as useful as a brick when it's really just 15 minutes away from working again.  Kinda the opposite of bricked.

One more question - in case of any card failure (not bricked from flashing), can the service detect the card BIOS was flashed?

trick in voltage control, which is OverDrive can't do, yet.
hope AMD port this OD feature to Linux, faster.
