An Egyptian jetliner carrying 66 people from Paris to Cairo abruptly swerved, vanished from radar and plunged into the Mediterranean early Thursday, shortly before it was scheduled to land. Egyptian officials said wreckage had been found and suggested terrorism was a more likely cause than technical failure.

The loss of the flight, EgyptAir 804, was the second civilian aviation disaster for Egypt in the past year. It immediately resurrected fears and speculation about the safety and security of Egyptian air travel and broader questions about terrorism against civilian air travel.

Egypt and Greece mounted an intense search-and-rescue operation in the southern Aegean Sea, and, on Thursday afternoon, the Greek authorities said debris believed to be from the wreckage had been found at a site around 205 nautical miles southeast of Crete and 190 nautical miles south of the Greek island of Karpathos.

EgyptAir reported “the finding of wreckage of the missing aircraft” a few hours later in a Twitter posting. Nonetheless, there were conflicting news reports about precisely what had been found, with some Greek officials saying no determination had been made.

The Egyptian civil aviation minister, Sherif Fathi, told a news conference in Cairo that it was premature to draw conclusions about the cause of the crash, but he quickly acknowledged that it might be terrorism.

“I don’t want to go to speculations and I don’t want to go to assumptions,” Mr. Fathi said. Still, he said, “if you analyze the situation properly,” the possibility of “having a terror attack is higher than the possibility” of technical failure.

The jetliner, an Airbus A320, departed Paris at 11:09 p.m. on Wednesday. The pilot spoke to Greek air traffic controllers at 2:26 a.m. and nothing seemed out of the ordinary, officials said. Three or four minutes later, the plane made its last normal radar contact.

At 2:37 a.m., shortly after entering Egyptian airspace, the plane made a 90-degree turn to the left and then a full circle to the right, first plunging to 15,000 feet from 37,000 feet and then to 9,000 feet. At that point it disappeared from radar, the Greek defense minister, Panos Kammenos, said at a news conference on Thursday afternoon.

Flight 804 was carrying 56 passengers, including three children; seven crew members; and three members of airline security personnel. A list of the passengers’ nationalities, released by the airline, said that 30 were from Egypt, 15 from France, two from Iraq and one each from Algeria, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Chad, Kuwait, Portugal, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.

I agree that we have problem with terrorists but don't agree that we have problem with Islam as religion.
Terrorists have no religion, no nationality or race, they hate all humankind, including Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, atheists etc.
In my country Muslims live last 500 years and we don't have any problem with them.
Before you accuse 500 million people in the world for terrorism and evil, please think more about it.
Life is not simple white and black but usually grey and very often you will find good Muslims around you and some very bad Christians.

You have no right to say "terrorists have no religion," when they themselves self identify themselves and their actions as Muslim (or whatever).

I think it's time for the West to admit that Islam is a problem.

The problem isn't Islam, the problem is derenged maniacs and they come in all shapes and sizes.  Last year in America there was more than 1 mass shooting per day.  And those are essentially acts of terrorism, but for various reasons the govt doesn't label them that because they have an agenda to push.  Americans are in far more danger of their fellow local people than some foreign presence.  That's what they should be focusing on and not boogie man with a small chance of impacting their lives.

I agree.

In my country have many Muslims, who Look may think are pacific because at least until now not had any terrorist attack, but not as well ... these Muslims devote both the Koran that it's unhealthy.

One day accompanied a Sr that was lost, that you wanted to go to the mosque, I the Companions until the mosque, reaching the mosque he said to me:

Do not step on the tour because it is sacred.

I was shocked, being on the other tour was very dangerous ... but I did what he asked me out and the tour gives mosque and was the forbidden ride authorities (ride that was being banned by the authorities to stay because was dangerous) 5 minutes after I leave the forbidden ride by the authorities, a car in high speed was hitting the punch, if I had it would have died instantly.

Muslims prohibit children, women, men who are not Muslims passing in the mosque tour, many children returning from school are run over because they can not pass the mosque tour.

Hey, let's not go too fast!
We don't know yet the cause of that crash. I see only one culprit at this time, and that's France. If someone put a bomb aboard, there is a security issue at the airport. If it's a technical failure, there should have been technicians identifying the problem before take off.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

I really  don't understand  your mentality! Why you should go into mosque is you are not muslim?  That's the question!

And even that mosque was build from "public taxes" it was build for specific denomination.

Such a mentality generates hate. Are you an atheist??

I'm a Christian but I'm not going into mosque or synagogue ( and I'm not tried ever)

Are you fucking kidding me?  See bolded above.

This is crazy talk.  Let me translate it.

Here is my street.  "If you walk down my street I will run you over."

Are you really saying that's okay?

EgyptAir Was Aware of Threats to Security, Including One Scribbled on Plane

In an eerie coincidence, the EgyptAir jetliner that plunged into the Mediterranean on Thursday was once the target of political vandals who wrote in Arabic on its underside, “We will bring this plane down.”

Three EgyptAir security officials said the threatening graffiti, which appeared about two years ago, had been the work of aviation workers at Cairo Airport. Playing on the phonetic similarity between the last two letters in the plane’s registration, SU-GCC, and the surname of Egypt’s president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, some workers also wrote “traitor” and “murderer.”

The officials, who were interviewed separately and who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the airline’s security procedures because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said the graffiti had been linked to the domestic Egyptian political situation at the time rather than to a militant threat. Similar graffiti against Mr. Sisi, a former general, was scrawled across Cairo after the military ousted the elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in 2013.

Since then, the airline has put into effect a variety of new security measures in response to Egypt’s political turmoil, jihadist violence and other aviation disasters like the crash of a Russian plane that killed 224 people in October. EgyptAir has fired employees for their political leanings, stepped up crew searches and added extra unarmed in-flight security guards. Three such guards died in Thursday’s crash of Flight 804.

Whether those moves were sufficient remained an open question on Saturday as experts pored over data emitted by the plane in its final minutes for clues as to what had brought it down. The French air accident investigation authority confirmed that the data showed that several smoke alarms had been activated while the plane plunged toward the sea.

But they cautioned that the signals, sent by a monitoring system on board the Airbus A320 jetliner, did not offer enough information to conclude what had caused the crash.
