Time Machine is a good way to backup everything including your Bitcoin wallet.dat. But you should exclude everything EXCEPT the wallet.dat in Bitcoin directory to avoid the block chain data filling up your back up drive.

~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/blocks is the big one, if you're bothered about your TimeMachine filling up - though only the last block changes over time, so the rest will be pretty much 'backup once' then ignore.

Do watch out for unencrypted walled backups also. That's how they stole like 30k BTC from Bitfloor. If you're going to store any significant amount of BTC in your wallet, make sure that you encrypt it with a strong password, and if you didn't do this immediately when you created your wallet, make sure you find and destroy any backups of the wallet from before you encrypted it.

I'm trying to figure out how to back up my wallet - and I'm using a MAC OS 10.8.3

I know nothing about Time Machine or encryption so I'm asking for your forgiveness in advance.

Is there anyone with patience who is using MAC OS 10.8.3 who can walk me through a step-by-step way of securing my BTC wallet while still allowing me to use it?

Thanks in advance.

Shawnna, I could easily walk you through setting up a Time Machine if you're still wondering.
