So I was walking around and found what appears to be a half buried cannonball in the dirt. Didn't want to poke at it or kick it around obviously, but I may if curiosity gets the best of me. I don't know what to do next. Any suggestions?

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

There are a two types of cannonballs. Ones filled with gunpowder and others that are solid. I guess it could explode if the powder is still dry and you somehow ignite it. Just dig the thing up and look for seams or just throw it into a bon fire and see what happens..

I dug it up. It's five inches in diameter and weighs 16 lbs. I'm gonna try and sell it at a pawn shop tomorrow

Yeah, I haven't figured out how to post a picture. After further inspection, though, I've come to the conclusion that it's probably a 16lb shotput

It's probably an old WWII unexploded landmine. Stamping on it a few times will confirm my suspicions. Let us know how you get on?

You could be right about that. I haven't seen a 16lb cannonball listed anywhere. http://arc.id.au/Cannonballs.html
